| DESIGN NAME: Croma Concrete PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench System INSPIRATION: Croma has evolved from a request by Tiba Architects, a highly respected Hungarian rchitecture studio. They have discovered our products, which they very much liked but they wanted something completely different, so they commissioned us with the designing. We started to brainstorm and to design, which led to the birth of an idea, that we later developed into a product, which has been our best selling one since. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: One of the great advantages of the CROMA bench system results from the versatility of its construction, as it consists of five basic modules which can make up large, block-like clusters, where several groups of people can easily coexist. Due to the modular system, massive clusters can be installed even in inaccessible areas, making it an ideal meeting point and urban lounging spot. Apart from its physical advantages, the CROMA Concrete Bench System as object is suitable for dividing a space in a subtle, yet firm manner. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Croma bench system is a completely self-explanatory object, that any person or groups of people can get comfortable on and co-exist. It might serve as a nice spot for a quick lunch, a stable platform of a deep conversation or the perfect surface for stargazing. It's versatile modules enable endless options of assembling, therefore it can individually fit any public space or need. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 5 months, Budapest, Hungary |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Croma was designed to have a slim and complex form with a heavy-duty structure and unexpectedly fine surface. The bench system was created from high performance concrete, that we have developed throughout a year and a half from custom-made moulds. It was designed for long-term use. The bench was load tested with a one-cubic-meter water tank on top of it and has a compression strength of 100-110 N/mm2 and an 8-10 N/mm2 tensile and flexural strength. The surface is coated with water-repellent impregnation, so it is easy to clean and maintain. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size of each module: 1200 mm x 640 mm x 450 mm Total size: Depends on arrangement Weight of each module: 230-300 kg Material: High-Performance Concrete (HPC) Color: white Finish: Natural concrete with surface protection An optional rubber seat can be added. TAGS: bench, bench system, concrete, street furniture, concrete bench RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research: new concrete mixtures developed for this project. We use special High Performance Concrete, self developed in our factory. It gives a very strong and smooth surface, which makes possible to create very fine concrete graphics. In addition, the HPC Concrete gives a very strong weather resistant surface, which is also strong enough against common graffitis. This technical advantages makes us possible to create really durable furniture for long term use. CHALLENGE: How to create expressive outdoor objects made of concrete which can be set up easily and give a high grade of flexibility to shape a place.
