DESIGN NAME: Inside-Out
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cafe'
INSPIRATION: The owner of this cafeʻ is a conscientious man. and the coffee he made is extremely good. By tasting the coffee he made, you can feel it is not just a cup of coffee, but with the feeling of his heart. So, we want to design a space can deliver the such feeling from inside to outside and to let people outside can feel the strength of coffee which is from the owner. Then, this project is to design an abstractive sense of inside-out.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The program of this project is a cafe', a coffee shop. we want to design something beyond the seeing, not only visual sense but also feeling and imagination, and then be fascinated.
This project has a very small area but feels like quite bigger.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: to understand the demands of client. and to find out the design which we want to express. then, kept doing study, check, verify. every section result, we share with client to discuss if there's any we need to improve. at last, we come out the design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2015 in Taipei, Taiwan and finished in June 2015. And it also opened in June 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The key concept of this case is to reverse interior to outer space, which is “inside out”. Using three elevations to define the area of the space first. Then, penetrating enclosure is to build the connection with surrounding urban society. Furthermore, by blurring the interior and outer boundary, and extend the material from inside to outside, to let the strength of inside deliver to outside. The depth of field is considered with visional design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: we used contextual design thinking and abstractive thinking to develop the design.
First, contextual design thinking way. We studied the basic meanings of "inside" & "outside".
And, found the connections or context. then, figured out the content we wanted to show. such as the human hair, it is growing from the inside of skin and stretch outside of skin.
In Asia, due to the culture, sometimes people thoughts don't deliver directly. We have to imagine the context and situation then find out the expression or the meaning. So, we used the same thinking way to do the design detail.
To imagine the smell of great coffee spread to outside and lead the people willing to go inside.
meanwhile, people can see the visual extension from inside to outside and outside to inside as well.
then, we deliver the inside out.
CHALLENGE: The challenge during design phase was the abstractive thinking. People are use to feel the things by seeing concreted image. however, this project is trying to feel the sense by imagining.
