DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Synapse

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Educational Kids' Playground

INSPIRATION:
Human brain grows fast in the age of 0~7 years old, and the SYNAPSE is the key of the development. Synapses are essential to neuronal function: neurons are cells that are specialized to pass signals to individual target cells, and synapses are the means by which they do so. So, for this playground, we generated the idea not only for playing but also learning and developing to children. The Synapse is exactly the concept of the design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
There is a place which offers children to learning by playing inside. It is a playground for kids in a hotel. It is designed for families’ stay in the hotel especially with children. However, since the place is quite nice for families with children, why don’t open to the neighbors which is nearby the hotel. So, it is not only a kids’ playground of the hotel, but also a family commutation center to the area.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The main concept-Synapse is strong enough for the express. however, to transform the shapes of synapse and neuron is a task. Don't want to be too concreted and too easy. So, analyzing and finding the function of neuron & synapse is necessary. Neuron can connect a lot of synapse, and the function of synapse is to connect neuron and deliver signals to neuron. So, if the playing sections are neurons, there has to be some connections to them, and the isles are exactly good part for this. The isles of the space are connect to the sections and deliver our player to the sections for playing and creating things.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2015 in Taoyuan, Taiwan and finished in August 2015. And officially opened in September 2015.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
To the space forming, using the main concept of neuronal & synapse shape to transform into the space. And different playing sections/areas look like the neuron that connect with isles which are reflect to the function of synapse. For children brain and sense developing, to design different levels of ground which can develop the visual and environmental response to the layers of things, and the different size of holes and hidden space design can develop the potential abilities of discovery. A cozy atmosphere permeates as the construction is mainly made by natural pine plywood.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
For the playground, we hope it is not only for playing but also for kids developing. So, it generated a well-defined object which was “how to develop the childrenʻs potential with fun.” Then, it came to all the rest of sub-studies. Using contextual design to figure out the connections and relations of playing and developing. finally, we found the main concept-Synapse, and some space design points of view for childrenʻs potential developing.
