DESIGN NAME: Sprocket
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting Fixture Chandelier
INSPIRATION: Mechanical Gear and Chain. Mechanical and industrial equipment is all around us to get products designed and made. My own shop is full of such equipment. This inspires me everyday.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sprocket is a unique design, a scaled replica of a Gear and Chain. The illumination of this product is energy efficient LEDs. Our own custom isolators were designed and developed for this project. This enables the light fixture to be suspended without any visible power cords. The chain portion of the light can be manipulated into different layouts, as it is modular in design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sprocket is a large chandelier, and is a unique, custom piece. Currently, this light can only be handcrafted in small batches. It is a masterpiece that is hand crafted in steel and aluminum.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Preliminary designs for the Sprocket light began in November 2015. The final product was made in March 2016. All design and manufacturing for the Sprocket light were completed at our facility in Surrey, BC, Canada

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Sprocket Light was made using steel sheet on the gear. Each tooth on the gear was meticulously bent to mimic the exact shape. The Chain components were made with aluminum and were cut using an OMAX waterjet machining center. LEDs were specially mounted on custom brackets, that enabled each of the strips to be isolated. The chain is modular, and each time a link is added, the new link will light up.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Approximately 10 ft x 10 ft x 8 in (3048 mm x 3048 mm x 203 mm)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The sprocket light is designed from a actual scale model of a gear and chain. The gear and chain is modified to produce a lighting product. I wanted to create a light that appeared to be floating in space. This was achieved using low voltage lighting. Using custom isolators, this enabled the light to be powered using two air craft cables.
CHALLENGE: To create a lighting chandelier that shows the culmination of my work to date. This light is unique, and beautiful. The fabrication of the gear was a challenge, to mold steel to gear shapes. Although the gear appears heavy, it only weighs about 20 kilograms.
