| DESIGN NAME: Maroma PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding side table INSPIRATION: As designers we trust in analytical and critical observation of daily routines as our main tool to find out situations that might require unexpected products. Consequently, our inspiration come out as the result of a systematic approach that we intend will lead us to create a line of products. Interviews to friends and individuals are combined with qualitative research in a path that has led us to the functional design of maroma, a product that is a twist to common auxiliary tables. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Maroma has been designed as a multifunctional and affordable furniture aimed to solve daily needs. Behind the apparent simplicity of Maroma, we can discover more than just a fashionable and discreet table. In fact, maroma’s hidden support improves user experience as it has been conceived to be used as a handy laptop stand. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Maroma is a multifunctional table that doesn’t look like an extra item in the house, instead of it, it’s intended to be part of the decoration. It can be used as a side table and respecting the needs of the user, the laptop stand might be employed without moving the table or folding it. In addition, it can be used as an auxiliary table that is comfortably stored anywhere. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in July 2015 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Maroma is mainly made of Beech Plywood fabricated by means of CNC technique. In fact, while Plywood is used to produce the surface of the table, metallic mechanisms allow the efficient set up of the folding system. Furthermore, the laptop stand is made of plastic laminate on its surface acting as a heat insulator and its two padded pieces are removable for washing. Finally, all cuttings are thought to be automatized, whereas the assembly and finishings are conventional. First, we made an analysis of different types of lifestyles and trends in design. Then we chose the user profile fitting better with our target customer and we asked a group of people about their lifestyle by means of observation and interviews based on images. The research ended up with a mood-board used to define the needs, preferences and behaviors that would help us to develop the concept of Maroma. CHALLENGE: The main challenge we faced was to put all together the specifications we wanted for the product while keeping a simple and timeless design. In addition, little stats were available and consequently we had to focus on qualitative information and our observational ability. That is why we created our own brief and decided to respect it with little modification until getting Maroma.
