DESIGN NAME: Diamond Heart
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: The diamond is also known as vájra in Sanskrit and is the hardest material on earth. Buddhist scriptures use the diamond to describe the unswerving determination of the practitioner. The manager of the Epoch Times vows a steady heart that is like the diamond, fearless in the face of the power of the Chinese government. The Epoch Times insists on presenting clear messages about China and is the only independent media in the free world that is not controlled by a consortia, bought by the Chinese government nor afraid of their power. Epoch Times insists on broadcasting the news of China to the world while spreading news of the world throughout China. The company believes that the transparency of information enables safety between Taiwan and China, and even the stability and security of the world. Ensuring the people’s right to information and freedom from cover-ups by those in power is the social responsibility and mission of the media.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In response to the increase of internet media content throughout traditional newspapers, studios require complex walls as background to shoot videos and to produce interview programs. The design of the new office includes a variety of scenes that allow shooting in every corner without extra studio space. The corridors, conference rooms, and lobby can all be transformed into studios. Should there be a need for quiet video recording spaces, two small conference rooms with soundproof doors and green screens can also be used as studios at any time.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Aug. 2015 in Taipei and finished in Feb. 2016. Now it has produced a lot of videos and contents on line.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This design is inspired by the cutting methods of the diamond and symbolizes the diligence of the managers. On the left side of the entrance is a company image wall of new stories by the Epoch Times. Diamond cut designs are used as totems, at the same time blurring that fact that the restrooms are right next to the entrance. The wall of the main corridor extends the design of a diamond to the ceiling, with color charts that are composed of seven colors and blue glass, simulating the blue light rays of the diamond. This design echoes with the universe totem of the large conference room, one square the other round, one firm while the other is soft, yin and yang, just like the yin and yang in the I Ching. This design also symbolizes the Epoch Times’ diamond-like unyielding determination towards the power of the communist government of China, beaming and lighting the entire universe.
The right side of the entrance is built with a net of stainless steel which symbolizes the wall of the Chinese communist government, dividing and blocking freedom of the press. Behind the net is a map of China arranged with the Epoch Times newspaper. This symbolizes the Epoch Times’ efforts in breaking through the obstacles and restrictions and a two-way communication for true information between China and the world.
The small and medium sized conference room is used as news interview studio. It can also be used for recording talk shows to manage the increasing internet media business.
The diamond design of horizontal and vertical lines is also applied to the large employee space. Wave shaped lighting is used to suggest movement, while the storage area includes large whiteboards for brainstorming notes.
