| DESIGN NAME: Yohocube PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cardboard construction set INSPIRATION: The inventor of this construction set Elena Chuykova has worked in the sphere of creative design paper products for over 10 years. She has created a number of cardboard toys. The main drawback of cardboard toys as Elena saw was the weakness of construction. They models required either standing on the floor or gluing. Elena dreamt to create a portable cardboard toy - a construction set that will provide enough unity and strength. After 1 year of the research she finally crafted the idea. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An educational toy for kids 6-12 years old and creative adults consisting of cubes and prisms connected with folding fastener. For the first time in the history a cardboard construction details can be securely connected without glue providing the indispensable unity of shape so that the model can be carried and used as a normal toy (tossed, thrown, carried, etc). Some models are strong enough to endure the weight of up to 40 kg and can serve as toy furniture. International patent pending. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The toy develop motoric skills and educates 3D design. Originally elements are flat and the kids are supposed to assemble basic elements (cubes and prisms) first and then to create various models out of these cubes and prisms using connection fasteners. The kits contain different number of details to construct various models and are dived by levels based upon difficulty. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started December 2014 in Russia. In March 2015 we applied for Russian Patent and in 2016 for International patent. Mass production started in August 2015. Now we offering this product to a number of toy and creative shops including big Russian shop chains (Wildberries.ru, Ozone.ru. Detsky Mir, Respublica, Peredvizhnik, etc). PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Constriction set details are cut from 3-layer cellulose cardboard. For production special cutting stamps are created. Mass production and sales of the product started September 2015. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Cube flat - 290 x 360 x 1.5 mm Cube folded - 80 x 80 x 80 mm Prism flat - 195 x 320 x 1.5 mm Prism folded - 115 x 55 x 80 mm fastener - 110 x 35 1.5 mm TAGS: education toys, sustainable products, cardboard, construction kit RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Elena wanted to make a toy that can be both fun and creative. She has chosen cardboard as one of the eco materials that do not harm the environment. She tried many different ideas in cardboard construction. At last she got an inspiration to connect two details with fastener and a hard work of forging the idea began. Objective was to create assembling-disassemb CHALLENGE: Main difficulty was to find a balance between different limitations. The elements shall be small enough to be suitable for kid's hand, to be strong enough and shall be big enough for cutting machine to be mass produced.
