DESIGN NAME: Style Provocateur -Parfume
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Secondary Cellphone
INSPIRATION: Nokia first design handset "Lipstick phone". Form part, design language was there but user friendliness very much absent.
This model left it´s mark in the industry, being the first avant garde design handset on the mass market. It´s rather unsuccessful proof of concept, made me to come up something of my own. Never the less, this model had somewhat similar appearance that I already had on my own vision for the design handset.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: water, dirt resistant. Even submarine capable models were introduced along the project. Attractive form and smart handset topology. New kind of opening and closing mechanism in design handset were developed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: User opens the device and the main screen slides open from the cover. Like a stiletto knife. the main screen can be pushed back to shelter or simply let the servo motor to do that after push of a button.
This mobile handset uses induction charging platform. It is small and easy to carry along.
As an extra function and feature: The device is also capable to produce significantly loud sound for a User´s protection.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in 2005 in Finland. Finished in 2008. Project re-opened in March 2016 in Estonia.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: From pen and paper sketches to 3D-software designing. in the beginning the NURBS surface models to quickly come up with the proper form. Then producing water tight solids from the surface mess for CAD-drawings. Next rendering the image in Autodesk Fusion 360. Post processing in image manipulation software.
During the first project round I also used a lot of different materials to find the best solution for my prototypes.
Three different prototypes were produced by third parties.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Closed: 93.6x3
Main display slides to be seen from both end parts.
Opened: 154x3

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the 2006-2009 there were not any cost effective solution on the market for shielding the cellphone´s electrical components from excessive water intake. According to surveys, dropping the cellphone to the water was common issue.
Opening and closing mechanism for my form was something new on the market. The existing slider rails from other phones could not been directly utilized.
Almost every cellphone were looking pretty much the same. Lack of user´s personality. Display technology.
CHALLENGE: Cylinder as main form. How well that will work from user friendliness perspective. Prototype proved that it was possible and also easy to carry along.
From attractiveness point of view will it be hit or miss. Based on the given feedback it might have been a huge success.
Mass production wise, the major dilemma. 3D-printing was very much in it´s infancy, so developing a functional prototype -really expensive.
