DESIGN NAME: Fire Bird
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stage costume
INSPIRATION: This dress is inspired by fire bird, or we call it as phoenix in Asian country.A long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn.
Designer is a foreign student living in country where is 7 hours flight time from her country. She lost her beloved grandfather before starting this project and couldn't able to attend his funeral due to late notification.
Designer finally overcame her grief through the process of creating fire bird. "Stay strong no matter what happens, you can always reborn"
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The wings are being done based on researches of biological sciences and mechanics, and are being created based on standard tailoring techniques and tailoring materials.
Designer studied the differences between the structure and movement of bird wings and human arm.By understanding how to limit elbow joint's movement to bird wing's movement, hence the very first wearable wings are created.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This dress is conceived as turning a legendary bird into a real dress, and also turning bird wings into a combination of gloves and sleeves, which we can finally wear it in real life and move our arms like a bird.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It involved half year of complex procedures and experiments as there was no wearable wings which can be worn on arms existed before.
It was the main of designer's graduate fashion show in Tokyo back in year 2012.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The processes used for making the collection included a combination of tailoring techniques (wire modelling, smocking, feathers' making, sewing and pattern design),researches of biological sciences and mechanics.
The materials used for this dress is satin, silk, organza, bamboo sticks and resin sticks.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: size FR36, GB8, USA4

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research focused on evaluating existing reports about the differences between the structure and movement of bird wings and human arm, material characteristics and how far human arm can stand with the weight of feathers ( what size of wing that designer can create ). It consisted of 3 parts on a single wing, which means there are 2 joints on a wing and you can move like a bird.
CHALLENGE: This dress is set on a mythology inspiration and does not derive from an existing design. Therefore, the information supporting the making process and the results analysis researching similar experiments were minimal.
