DESIGN NAME: The New Dressing Table
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multi Functional Dressing Table
INSPIRATION: The research process started with exploring the small living spaces as the brief suggested. The aim was about interpretation of Living, Easy, Domestic, Clear, Clean, with a bias towards how one deals with storage. This relates strongly to the decreasing amount of physical domestic space, and the way of people live their lives especially in city and town apartments. The challenge was to understand how this manifests itself in furniture.
Exploring the daily lives of women and understanding problems that they were facing everyday lead the design process to end up with breaking the cliché understanding about dressing table as a furniture piece. The New Dressing Table is designed to be a problem solver which is only the result of "form follows function" process.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This dressing table has been designed to be a solution for the problems that women face everyday. The mirror’s positioning allows the user to do her makeup without having to lean in towards the mirror, it also acts as a cabinet with no obstructions. Here, cosmetics can be stored and accessed with ease while in use. The walnut veneered mirror also offers hidden storage units that open form the sides to store jewelry and other items. The body of the New Dressing Table is used to place handbags.
Refined and functional design only is the outcome of the "form follows function" philosophy.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This multi compartment dressing table allows user to do her make up without having to lean in towards the mirror. The sliding lids are specifically located in front of the mirror for make up storage which makes easier for user to access her make up goods while they are in use. Compartments for storing jewelery are located/hide inside the mirror which goes in and out from the sides. To keep the design as simple as possible, lids of the main body where the handbags are stored opens through pushing them in.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Spring 2013, London as Graduation Thesis Project at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and was exhibited in Satellite Salone del Mobile in April 2015.
