CARGOB URBAN ECO-BICYCLE

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Two in one eco-bike

INSPIRATION:
Currently most consumer goods are delivered from the point of production through one or more points of storage to a point of sale. Same happens to personal deliveries. Packages are tossed through various points or storage before they arrive in their destination. In United States, most cities deliver freight by vans in urban areas. There are different types of delivery businesses such as postal delivery, restaurant delivery, message delivery and so on.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The front cart can be separated from the bike, so that every time the deliver guy arrives at a building, instead of unloading all the packages into another cart, he can simply unlock the front cart from the body of the bike and pull it into the building. The motor on the back wheel can collect energy from riding and breaking. Subsequently, they can transfer the kinetic energy into electronic energy to charge other devices such as phones or the LED light on the bike.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The interaction part: I designed an app to simplify the delivery process. They can use the app to navigate their route once the addresses on packages are scanned into the system. Meanwhile, messages will be automatically sent to recipients to inform them of the delivery time. After receiving the package, recipients can also sign on the app to save the manual process of typing information into the postal system from the backend. at last, the app can also be used to reschedule undelivered packages.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2013 and finished in May 2014 in Detroit.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
It’s a global trend that more people will be riding bicycle in urban area, as a result of rapidly growing population and steadily decreasing shared space in these areas. It’s a global trend that clean and recyclable energy will be more commonly needed and utilized. It’s a global trend that not only individuals, but enterprises will also start to conduct in a greener and more sustainable manner in meeting their business objectives and social responsibilities. Currently most consumer goods are delivered from the point of production through one or more points of storage to a point of sale. Same happens to personal deliveries. Packages are tossed through various points or storage before they arrive in their destination. In United States, most cities deliver freight by vans in urban areas. There are different types of delivery businesses such as postal delivery, restaurant delivery, message delivery and so on. This design is aiming to provide a more environment and space friendly solution to delivery businesses.

CHALLENGE:
From my market research in Chicago and online research, I came to the conclusion that more people are riding bicycles in urban areas. They may ride bikes because it saves time, it saves money, saves parking and moving space, or it helps them to exercise. While after that, I wonder the same benefits of riding bikes would apply on delivery companies too. What the delivery companies have today are trucks. They use trucks to deliver goods, and every time the delivery guy arrives at a destination, he would need to unload everything into a cart and carry that to the apartments in the building. The whole process is time consuming because of the traffic jam in urban areas and also increases the workload for delivery people.

Peng Zhan is an creative, innovative and diligent designer, focusing on product design from United States. He graduated from College for Creative Studies(CCS) in Detroit. He is really passionate about what he do. He is detail driven and self demanding, always willing to learn and improve. He is eager to face his next challenge. He set up his design studio called PONZ DESIGN in 2014. His design vision involves focusing on finding and defining needs and doing deep research in order to develop logical and friendly user interface, design reasonable products, and solve real problems. In his work he experiments on various areas of the design discipline, trying to diversify his design language. This leads to his goal to create new innovation products that help simplify people's lives.
