DESIGN NAME: Leva-te o Surf
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Surfboard transport box
INSPIRATION: Inspiration came from my surfboard art painting, and of the difficulties I have on raping surfboards for shipping.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This box can be adapted to different sizes, shapes and thickness of surfboards. Surfboards are very delicate products, and have unique features adapted to each surfer’s skill, surfing stile and preferences, Longboards, shortboards, more floating or less floating boards, etc. So we had to create a box that could adapt to all. This is a pioneer transport service, that for the moment, you can only use nationally, Portugal.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The surfer can cutoff the excess cardboard to resize the box, and adapt it to the board. The box as outside printed instructions, for easy assembly and shipment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started 2013 and was send to production 2014, in 2015 to the public.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It has an inside and outside adaptable system that protects the transported board. The box is made in recycled cardboard and is printed with just 3 colors for lower production costs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As a surfer, I knew the difficulties of surfboard transport, and also talked with numerous surfers, shapers and surfboard factories. As a surfer and a surfboard artist it was easy to perceive the problems and the difficulties of transport. Regularly we received surfboards to work on and, after finished, pack and ship them ourselves.
CHALLENGE: As transport box we had to make it as cheap as possible, because the box is offended with the transport fee. There is a lot of competition between express mail delivery services, and the creation of a box for this specific service is a unique and innovative factor on this sector, but cannot add more costs to the transport. We had to create the most resistant box possible, that could secure the travel and the handling of the goods, but not too production costly, so that it wouldn’t make the costs exceed competitor’s prices.
