PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ceiling structure for F.lli ORSENIGO
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the Air project is undoubtedly The Tree of Life present EXPO International last year in Milan. There was very impressed with the engineering structure of the object. A bilateral plot that contrasts the stresses in any direction. We took the inspiration to realize a structure that could be easily hanging in environments, both domestic and public, and that it could support different sized plans for different uses.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Air is a structure from ceiling create for the dining table.
It can also be used to accomplish desk, reception, worktop and exhibition floors. It is designed for ceilings with a standard height of 2.7 m., But can be customized to the needs of the customer. A real table without legs, stable, versatile and usable. An object that goes beyond the single function but that would allow multiple possibilities of use.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The structure thus conceived, in addition to avoiding the footprint on the ground of the classic legs, facilitating the cleaning, can be used as a suspension element for countless applications, the dining table in a variety of sizes and finishes, or the counter of a shop or the reception of a hotel or restaurant, or the space of a showcase.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first meeting to define the projects for 2016 was made in December 2015. The Company F.lli ORSENIGO s.r.l. had asked us a new product that was not on the market. Hence the idea. The first concept we have presented in January this year, after a couple of weeks was realized the first prototype. The changes were minimal and we had to intervene on sections to curved tubes and ceiling plate. In February we approved the final product. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is made with iron pipes with two different sections (20 and 25 mm.) curved, welded and painted. The ceiling suspension is achieved with screws and dowels. The plans are supported with two sandwich stacked disks held by screws. The plans can be made of various materials, from glass to wood to ceramic, customizable.
An LED lamp is inserted into the central cylinder.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: AIR is composed of a cross-lattice structure which measures 1950 mm. in height (Standard, but customizable to the extent required by the customer) for a diameter of 240 mm .. On the top is welded to a sheet metal plate by 5 mm. of 600 mm. in diameter. On the bottom it is welded in a 5 mm sheet metal ring. the diameter of 360 mm., which connects, through the table top,a second ring 5 mm. thickness is 450 mm. in diameter. In the middle between the two rings is located the plane, that can be of different sizes and different materials, and is crossed by fixing screws. The packaging is in cardboard boxes and polystyrene for the structure, and in cardboard and wood for the plans.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There has not been a real abstract research. We started with an inspiration and an one intuition. We wanted to create a product that was not already present on the markets, attempts to create a dinning table with no legs, viewed and examined, they were all pretty preposterous size and/or complexity of the structures and/or general instability.
This is definitely a case where the form-function equation was confirmed. Each element performs and fixes a static and structural problems.
The final form leaves nothing to the only exterior appearance.
CHALLENGE: We started with very clear ideas from the beginning of design. The real challenge was to create a truly rigid structure, a table or a work plan must not fluctuate!. After the theoretical checks we went to work on the first prototype and after small adjustments we achieved the objective we set ourselves.
If you have a good ceiling AIR you can be installed without problems.
