DESIGN NAME: WorkAway Outdoor Office
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Office
INSPIRATION: WorkAway was inspired by the 'New Way of Working'. Since all we need to work is a laptop and WiFi connection, we can work wherever and whenever we want to. Flexwork and working at home is strongly supported by the Dutch government.
WorkaWay gives the opportunity to work outside by providing shade and comfort. It can also serve as a short business meeting place. This way, both parties don't need to travel the entire distance giving a sustainable advantage.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WorkAway outdoor office is a comfortable workplace for the public space, ideal for people on the go. The cube can be easily rotated in order to avoid direct sunlight or wind. It is suitable for various locations, including business parks, car parks, campuses and public transport nodes as a workstation for in between or as a meeting place. With WorkAway you can enjoy the fresh air in great comfort while working surrounded by the natural environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Workaway encourages the user to interact. By turning the workspace you can avoid direct sunlight on the desk and direct wind or rain. When two people sit inside, the acoustic is very good while the conversation seems to stay inside. Outsiders can hear very little of what is happening inside. Since the cube is made of sustainable foam the seat and the desk always feels warm to the body.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took about two years. It was designed in the The Netherlands. Three WorkaWays are installed at the Utrecht Science Park under the name 'Science Cubes'. A WorkaWay was also used as a promotion and information spot at the starting point of the 'Tour de France' in 2015 in Utrecht.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After the initial idea of Mr. Maarten Langen to create a workplace for outside, several Design Thinking workshops were held to figure out the best way of function and the best setup of the workplace. After creating many rough design concepts, talks with end users and street furniture producers were held. After the final concept was selected, deep ergonomic research was part of the design process. The seating comfort in relation to the desk height was a difficult process since many different people will have to use the workplace comfortably.
CHALLENGE: The design is a mix of ergonomics, user-focus and interaction with the architecture and its surroundings. Also, large areas for advertising or promotion were important.
