DESIGN NAME: hex key
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fasten/Unfasten Screws
INSPIRATION: When people do construction works or building furniture, they often need hex key to fasten screws. Different sizes of screws need different sizes of hex keys so that a set of hex keys may be needed to cope with various requirements. However, sometimes people may become tired after their works and left their small tools such as hex keys everywhere thus next time they could not find the hex key with the size they want easily.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is an “all in one” product which enables people
to carry and use hex keys more easily. Also, the new hex keys sets have a smooth and metallic surface which makes them modern and elegant, and their shapes mimic those of traditional hex keys which give people a sense of what it is at the first glance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Six different sizes are included in the sets. Users can move forward the switches and let one size or multiple sizes stick out in order to fit in the screws and solve problems with correct keys.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 in Providence, Rhode Island (U.S.) and finished in January 2016 in Champaign, Illinois (U.S.).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material of the metallic tube and the hex-key parts is stainless steel.
The material of the cover of the handle is PVC/PTR rubber.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea emerges in response to the real life inconvenience in constructions of furnitures.
CHALLENGE: The Hardest part of the design is to design the switches which make various hex keys to stick out. The challenge is to add multiple switches on the smooth metallic tube and also to express the beauty of simplicity and cleanness. The evenly distributed switch design solved this problem.
