DESIGN NAME: Janus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Material Handler Excavator
INSPIRATION: From the beginning of the project the aim was to see this machinery as something else then a specialized excavator. After researching the recycling industry and predicting its future, the conclusions were pointing to a design that;was seen more as a recycler than a construction machine and had the ability to maneuver in narrow roads of recycle stations or hangars with planes waiting to be recycled.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The concept of this project was to increase maneuverability and safety
in material handler excavators while exploring new functions for future
work places. The aim was to take the design of this vehicle out of the
standart excavator form and to make an already specialized machinery even more specialized for it future workspace. The result is a vehicle that can maneuver the narrow roads of future scrapyards with zero blindsides.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The vehicle can swing in two points. First is the standart turret swing of excavators, the second is a swing point for the operator cabin. This separates the vehicle into two modes. Driving and working. In driving mode the cabin is in a position that has no obstacles on any of its sides so that there are no blind sides. The cabin rotates to get the machine into the working mode in which it is elevated for increased visibility.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2015 in Istanbul and finished in January 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I started this project by studying the junkyard workspace and how it may change in the future. I observed that the workspace could be very narrow. Thus one of my concepts would be "maneuverability". Next I researched the safety features of the vehicle. Seeing the numerous blind spots, I set my second concept as "visibility". To achieve full visibility I split the vehicle into two modes. I also wanted a more entegrated stabilizing system with making the whole vehicle sit on the ground.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 3102mm x 9176mm x 3607mm
Main internal parts are ; a diesel engine, two hydraulic pumps and their auxiliary pumps, a control valve unit, a reservoir, a filter, two hydraulic motors, two swing motors and batteries.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research started with reading articles, mostly on the internet then progressed to interviews with people in the recycling and material handling industry. The objective was to see where the future of this workplace was going. The results showed that future material handling jobs would involve even narrower workplaces, such as hangars and warehouses for airplane recycling. This made the design more focused on maneuverability and total eyesight.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in this project was to get outside of the boundaries of standart work machine forms and think outside of these boundaries. This challenge had to be tackled to design a vehicle which the people in the industry would see as "different".
