| DESIGN NAME: Spring Stool PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool INSPIRATION: The inspiration of Spring came from the fascination of materials- to challenge how things can be made and put together. The bar stool is made out of three parts- plywood seat, dowel legs, and a third solid wood piece which connects the two. The cantilever structure in the stool was designed from scratch, and each individual part serves a functional and structural purpose. With playfulness and comfort in mind, the design includes plywood seat and tilted dowel legs, with a gravity center that is awkwardly pushed to the front which makes people wonder whether the chair can legitimately held weight. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Spring stool is an all-wood cantilever bar stool with an inviting and playful appearance. Using the same technique as the Spring chair. The bar stool integrates solid wood and plywood in a unique way, as the changing direction of the grain gives the bar stool a subtle yet distinctive character. The plywood seat and dowel legs give an extra springiness to the bar stool, while the solid wood front edge provides a soft touch for the back of the knees. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Spring stool is designed for everyday use, both at home and indoor public space. Its unique cantilever construction, aside from providing extra physical comfort to the seat, can be seen as a trust fall challenge and provides a sense of playfulness to the environment. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The bar stool is made out of three parts- plywood seat, dowel legs, and a third CNC solid wood piece which connects the two. The cantilever design requires a thorough experiment and study of the joints in order to provide enough strength to achieve the design goal. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 400mm * 435mm * 710mm(seat) TAGS: Material research, Spring, Cantilever, Bar stool, all-wood RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: Constructed like no others, the cantilever design in the Spring collection is built from scratch. With playfulness and comfort in mind, the design includes plywood seat and tilted dowel legs, with a gravity center that is awkwardly pushed to the front which makes people wonder whether the chair can legitimately held weight. The cantilever design therefore requires a thorough experiment and study of the joints in order to provide enough strength to achieve the design goal. In order to find out the best way to join the pieces, the designer has built multiple prototypes through out the process. The chair is currently in process for production.
