DESIGN NAME: Tic Tac Toe packaging
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: "We believe the birth of a child is the most beautiful experience of our lives. Our purpose is to celebrate this wonderful moment by creating shoes and clothes as beautiful as the babies themselves and say… Welcome to Life!" Tic Tac Toe.
We wanted to make the products special and decided they required packaging that was both an experience in presentation and upon opening. The 'reversible9; shoes created both an opportunity and challenge with the result being to offer maximum visibility.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: All clothing items come in a sophisticated, multi-dimensional pack. There is no front or back, both sides are equally interesting and beautiful. The front has an endearing deer and fawn die-cut window that shows off our stunning prints. The back has a die-cut heart that is three dimensional and framed in a second heart. Open the pack and a wonderful discovery unfolds. The reversible shoes come in a beautiful “double-sided” pack. The large window allows visibility all around. A perfect gift set.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Clothes pack is carried from a satin ribbon. The pack is presentable from both front and back. To open the pack a flap next to the die cut 3-dimensional heart is lifted to reveal the "Welcome to Life" ™ message from Tic Tac Toe and some further information about the company. The inside flap is again opened, like a book, to discover the care and sizing copy. Opening this flap reveals the neatly folded product. Once the product is removed and unwrapped a further discovery is made with a "Thank You" card.
The shoe pack is similar to the clothes pack and is also carried from the satin ribbon. Three clips are released to open the pack, revealing the shoes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Both projects took about 3 months to complete and both were printed, in Cape Town, South Africa.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 2 Spot colours on white Alpine Art SBS board 610mic 380g/m2, die cutting, foiling, glueing of die cut/scored 175mic acetate window.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Clothes pack size is 150 x 150 x 37.5mm excluding ribbon.
Shoes pack size is 150 x 150 x 37.5mm excluding ribbon.
TAGS: Baby, clothes, reversible shoes, packaging, gift set, gift
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was conducted with selected Tic Tac Toe retailers to establish their requirements.
Extensive research was conducted with what materials, processes and die cutting constraints were available.
CHALLENGE: There were two main challenges to this project.
The reversible shoes are "different"; but can be made to match each other. We needed to show the two options, both the top of the shoes and underside, clearly. The easy option would have been a clear plastic box, but this would not have satisfied our second challenge.
The Tic Tac Toe image dictated a sophisticated, subtle, minimalist, upmarket pack. The biggest challenges of combining full visibility in a subtle yet sophisticated upmarket pack was finally reached after many prototypes and redesigns. As a bonus we made both clothes and shoes packs identical is size making them easy to display, ship and store.
