PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Electric Motorcycle

INSPIRATION:
Inspired by the custom motorcycle builders from DEUS and WRENCHMONKEES, their instant commitment to find the essence of motorcycle riding and left behind everything unimportant. Also, by the visionary worlds of Daniel Simon and Joseph Kosinsky

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Target was to create an universal two-wheeled vehicle for urban, commuter and short distance use in a sustainable way. Demand on frequent charging is solved by using switchable battery. Optimal technical base for a chain of charging stations with renewable energy sources, where battery units are leased. Dashboard is transparent, the rider can see the road through it. Upper part includes a storage space for luggage.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Control of the motorcycle is very similar to conventional riding. Motorcycle has no transmission, so there is no clutch lever and shift pedal. On the handlebars are the brake levers- like on a scooter. Direct charging goes via charger plug, on the top of the luggage housing. For battery switch, motorcycle needs to be fixed in stand position. Battery connectors in the luggage area are released. then the right side frame is unlocked and opened. This pulls out the battery to the right side. Used battery is removed, charged battery placed in. By flipping back the side frame, the new battery is dragged into its fixed position. As last step, new battery needs to be connected to the motorcycle wiring, in the luggage area.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Chassis and swingarm are Trellis frames from welded steel-tubes, right section of the frame can be opened for battery switch. Electric motor is mounted directly on the swingarm, the force is transmitted by chain to the rear wheel. The chain runs inside of the swingarm, in a closed chamber. Advantages: so can motor work as generator while breaking and chain does not need frequent maintenance. The transcluent brake fluid reservoirs are illuminated, working as front turn indicators

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Overall dimensions are: 1977 x 860 x 1278 mm (length x width x depth). Wheelbase is 1328 mm, Battery unit dimensions: 580 x 360 x 200 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
From technical point of view, the most challenging part was to find the optimal arrangement of the functional parts. There were lots of alternative of battery mound/unmount, concepts of the powertrain. Also, finding the proper balance of traditional and futuristic look was not a five-minute job:) In both cases, there were lots of there-and-backs. I tried to track all suitable options and choose the best of them.
