| DESIGN NAME: Oriental landscape PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting cup INSPIRATION: The Lighting Cup is designed for multifunctional use. It is useable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. When illuminated, moonlit landscape is illustrated gently on the cup. The landscape illustration of the Lighting Cup revisits the traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuwha) in three-dimension which elegantly reflects meditative Asian sentiment with our ‘Affective Artwork’. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The landscape illustration on the Lighting Cup is derived from Soomook-sansuhwa, a traditional Korean landscape painting. Reinterpreted as illuminated ceramic art, the landscape is “drawn” with the variation in thickness of the cup walls. The Lighting Cup is useable as a teacup and turns into ornamental lighting when combined with a saucer which has an embedded LED. The light is turned on and off with a touch sensor and is powered by a rechargeable battery that supports a Micro-USB connection. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ceramic cup for lighting and interior design: useable as a teacup and turns into an ornamented lighting cover for LED light at night with delicate illustration of a traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuhwa) / The light is turned on and off with a touch interface and is powered by a rechargeable battery that supports a Micro-USB connection PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2015 and finished in December 2015 in Gwangju, South Korea. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material Used: Cup and Regular Saucer – Ceramic, LED Saucer – Plastic SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: Cup (H:65xDia:100), LED Saucer (H:23xDia:140), Ceramic Saucer (H:23xDia:145) / On/Off switch with touch interface / Easy-to-move with rechargeable battery supporting Micro-USB connection / Standard Micro-USB cable compatible (Does not support iPhone cable) / Dimming control for LED brightness (two levels) / Up to 8 ~ 10 hours of continuous LED lighting (at lowest brightness level TAGS: cups, Korean landscape painting, LEDs, ornamental lighting, saucer RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Originally, I wanted to give ordinary housewares extraordinary function and got the idea on Light Cup through an upset cup. Lighting Cup is made from translucent white ceramic clay. Korean traditional landscape painting, "Soomook-sansuh CHALLENGE: The lighting ceramic cup is usable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. Therefore, it should have thinner walls (2~3mm) than normal ceramic cups for better light transmittance. There was a difficulty in making a ceramic cup with thin walls because the cup shape was distorted during the manufacturing process. The problem was overcome through lots of trial and error, which led many know-hows on the process.
