Balet Lamp & Book Holder
One of the preliminary goals of this design was to create a functional piece of furniture that is suited to a modern interior environment. Based on newest research of Pew Research Center, an average American reads 12 books in a year.Therefore, the main mission of this Ballet Lamp is to carry the high appreciation of books.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This design is innovative because it combines the functionalism of a lamp to that of a bookshelf that has capability of holding up to 12 novel size books. Therefore, it becomes personal for each user by their choice of books. It allows the user to express his/her individually by the favorite books they display.
The design contains a low energy light source for users to read or just for ambient lighting.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
By minimizing the number of components, applying available standard fasteners, no special tools are required to assemble this product. Therefore, a customer can totally assemble it himself at home.
For using, users simply turn the top of this design to pick the book they want.

The project start in September 2015 and finished in February 2016 in Montreal

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The main process, Aluminum extrusion, allows to achieve a complex design and yet interesting form for the top book holder that can’t be done by any others process; an alternating process is Investment casting but it’s too costly. This process is extremely fast and accurate which reduces the cost of manufacturing. Besides, The Anodizing color process adds to the visual quality and metallic finish.
Materials are Aluminum, Polycarbonate, Nylon.

The design process contain different sets of skills in: brainstorming, market analyzing, ideation, idea selecting and developing, prototyping and model testing, cost analyzing, reality visualize with CAD soft wares.
The design challenge is to show, to express the beauty of extruded aluminum. Taking fully the advantage of superior surface quality and visual interests of an anodized finish to create a fresh contemporary look. Besides, another challenge is to simplify the working place, reading corner keener.
