DESIGN NAME: Splash
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Alarm Clock
INSPIRATION: An alarm clock can be more useful when it not only pushes users away from their beds but also pulls them toward their next action. It means that an alarm clock needs to introduce an activity that helps users recover their consciousness to remember their next moves and provide momentum to pursue them. Since touching water is one of the best ways to refresh mind and it's already part of people's morning routine, combination of 'alarm clock' and 'touching water' can provide smooth yet efficient waking up experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Splash is a set of an alarm clock and a sensor that prevents users from falling back to sleep and provides smooth waking up experiences. While the function of other alarm clocks end right after their users wake up, Splash help users go through their morning routine with a clear mind by making them wash their face or take a shower to turn off the alarm.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Through the micro USB port, users can power the alarm clock and charge its internal battery which is installed to prevent users turning off the alarm by pulling out its main power. And users can also connect the alarm clock to a computer to upload desirable sound or music that will be used as the alarm.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took 1 month in Philadelphia.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The water sensor is separate from the main power source and needs to be recharged regularly. To avoid water damage and making users uncap socket every time they recharge the sensor, inductive recharging method is used to create single solid body.
To keep the sensor stainless and easy to dry before putting it back on the alarm clock, superhydrophobic coating will be applied on its surface.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 65mm x Depth 65mm x Height 155mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the beginning of the project, I conducted interview and close observation on 15 subjects to understand the main reason behind the people falling back to sleep. Questions related to their waking up habit and process were asked, and their thoughts at the moment they wake up were documented. The result showed that they were having hard time staying away from their beds because their judgement was not fully recovered to realize the importance of waking up at the moment, and I conduct further research on later design phase based on it.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was designing the way of turning off the alarm acceptable and hard to hack for users.
Even if there is a perfect way, if users don't follow the method, it will never be appreciated. And forcing users follow the 'right way' would also cause negative opinions on the design. Therefore, I needed to design the method comfortable to follow
