DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
SPH

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Smart Prosthetic Hand

INSPIRATION:
If one touches the smart phone screen with an artificial finger the screen does not recognize the signal very well, and making any detailed control is extremely difficult. People occasionally drop their phones even with their real hands, but existing artificial arms only implement 60~80% of the function of natural hand, which means if one grabs the phone with the prosthetic hand and touch the screen with other, the risk of drop increases.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This design resolves the physical problem which occurs when one uses smart phone with an artificial hand. The smart device is attached to the prosthetic hand to eliminate the risk of dropping the device. The product allows the users to operate the device with the other free hand, thereby compensating the defect of recognition error when touching the screen with an artificial finger, and the difficulty of detailed operation of existing prosthetic hand.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The screen of the display attached to the prosthetic hand rotates digitally, and the user can view an upright screen from any directions. The display is made in circular shape for convenient rotation.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2016 in Korea and finished in June 2010 in Korea

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Tips of all fingers are made with silicone, and the inside of the finger is manufactured with aluminum and copper. As standby power of the device moves to the fingertips, static electricity is generated, and the capacitive touch is enabled through the silicone tips. It is specialized for smart devices which people today frequently use.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The display monitor is placed on the back of the hand, so that the product can fit both the user who wants the artificial hand and the user who wants an arm. The monitor on the back of the hand is circular, and is embedded with a software which rotates into an upright direction according to the angle the user is looking from. The battery is separable from the product.

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Although only few suffer the loss of one hand or an arm, people happen to experience unexpected injuries or accidents in everyday life, and there are still those who are born with disabilities. Thus the demand of prosthetic arms is constantly maintained at a certain level. By combining this prosthetic arm with smart devices, the product may be differentiated from other products in terms of convenience and new sensation in the market.

CHALLENGE:
The changes were made with surprisingly little difficulty.
