DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Degrade Lines

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Necklace

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration came by the material itself. Paper is an accessible material available in countless colors and textures. It has a very small thickness and an ability to create volume while being flexible and lightweight. Flexibility allowed various experimentation with folding techniques. This leaded to the geometry and texture of the final piece. Degrading colors came as a natural result of the material properties, allowing an integrated smooth gradual merging of colors in the final structure.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Degrade Line necklace is made of hundreds of pieces of paper folded and put together in layers to create a piece with great sense of volume and a soft lightweight feeling! The necklace is of a high resolution texture resulting from its structure. Its gradual color degradation comes through a geometrical merging of various color tones. It is also flexible enough to twist while preserving a minimal approach. Its finishing includes leather, a coral ball and a golden plated silver clasp.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Degrade Line necklace sits in the neck naturally since its structure and fine elements allows it to be adjustable and flexible while preserving solidity. The color degrade combination offers a splash of light that illuminates the face. The overall design has a minimal approach. Closing is very easy and the coral ball gives a touch of glamour and volume, just before the golden plated silver clasp.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The Degrade Line is the merge of two different collections the FOLD and the DEGRADE that exist in the brand since June 2015. The actual piece in terms of craft took eight hours to be fully completed!

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Degrade Line necklace is made from 762 folded circles of paper from 3 thicknesses and 8 color tones. Paper is both recycled and new! For the production of this necklace four processes were followed. The cutting of the pieces with special punches, the folding, the hole making and the passing through the steel thread. Finally the finishing includes brown leather, a coral ball and a golden plated silver 925 clasp. Final piece has a special varnish to protect from moisture!

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The necklace is to be worn short near the neck so the total length of it including the finishing is 45cm. Its diameter in terms of thickness is 56mm and its projected width is 23mmx26mm (simplifying the geometry).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research is an ongoing process for these series of necklaces in three areas: a) on the production and minimization of the processes, b)on the final varnish to protect from moisture, without losing flexibility and c) in the finishing of the jewel to be an additional element of the design.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge for this necklace was to succeed a smooth degradation of colors not only by picking the right colors but by merging them in a mathematical order that mixes two colors together gradually! It took some tests to reach the final result. The creative research includes also experimentation with folding techniques spacing between the pieces or not, rigidity issues and color degradation inspired from different sources in each piece. The specific piece is relating to the winter colors of a tree
