| DESIGN NAME: BlackVue DR650GW-2CH PRIMARY FUNCTION: Car Dashcam INSPIRATION: The form of DR650GW-2CH closely follows the dashcam's features. We were inspired by the dashcam's functions themselves; hence we chose the geometrical shape that could give the maximum reliability. We researched geometrical shapes that could go harmoniously with the features, finally selecting the cylindrical shape that provided the elements of both stability and adjustability we sought for this project. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: DR650GW-2CH is a surveillance car dashboard camera with a simple cylindrical shape. The mounting of the unit is easy, and thanks to the 360 degree rotation it's highly adjustable. The dashcam's proximity to the windshield minimizes vibrations and glare and allows for even smoother and more stable recording. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After installation, the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH is almost invisible to the driver, behind the rearview mirror and starts recording as soon as powered. Voice messages inform of important actions ("Starting Normal/Event recording", "Parking Mode Enabled", etc.). LEDs inform status changes (Wi-Fi activated, GPS activation). A single button allows to turn ON-OFF the Wi-Fi, as well as format the microSD card without removing it from its socket. A proximity sensor allows to trigger recording manually. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was born in the beginning of 2013 in South Korea, and the finished product was launched internationally in June of 2014. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: DR650GW-2CH is made of durable materials perfect for extended period of use. The materials such as ABS synthetic resin and polycarbonate - which outstanding feature is insulation - help minimizing the issue of overheating and vibrations. Manufactured via injection molding, the complicated elements of the dashcam's design were assembled to provide the most durability without using unnecessary bolts, just parts molded to fit perfectly. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Front camera : Black / W 118.5mm x L 36mm / 120g Rear camera : Black / W 67.4mm x L 27.6mm / 30g 2 Channel Dashcam, Full HD@30fps Front and HD@30fps Rear Micro SD Card Supporting Up To 128GB Built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and G-Sensor Viewing Software Supported by Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android Compatible with Blackvue Over the Cloud TAGS: DR650GW-2CH, DASH CAM, FULL-HD, 360 degree Camera, Security, Wi-Fi, Cloud RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We conducted our research with the main focus on expressing the minimalism of the design through the shape that would be compatible with the dashcam's features and no unnecessary adornments. In our form study, we sought to understand the trends, the issues and necessary upgrades for the product, and proceeded to find a solution. Finally we developed a cylindrical shape for the product, a design that despite its minimalism does not lose its key characteristic of stability and adjustability. CHALLENGE: The most challenging task was to create a signature design that would become Pittasoft's flagship product and an integral part of BlackVue's brand identity. The main issue to overcome was to limit the vibrations and windshield reflection to ensure high quality of the footage. The design is also optimized to minimize the overheating of the unit. On top of that, we focused on making the mounting and unmounting of the dashcam as easy as possible without compromising the elegance of the design.
