| DESIGN NAME: Electron PRIMARY FUNCTION: Luminaire Wall Sconce INSPIRATION: In physics, the electron is a subatomic particle with a negative elementary, electric charge. Electrons radiate energy in the form of protons when accelerated. Thus began the inspiration for the light that we designed and titled The Electron. The Electron Wall sconce reflects the image and nature of its namesake. What emerged from our inspiration is a beautiful, simplistic design that can be used in a variety of decors. It is illuminated with energy efficient LED strips through frosted clear acrylic along the inner and outer rings. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Electron is a wall mounted LED luminaire for indoor use. It has a beautiful, simplistic design that is modern and futuristic in appearance. LED lighting technology enabled the creation of this unique design and also produced an energy efficient luminaire. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Electron is a simple design that is modern and futuristic. Although its design is simplistic, advanced engineering came into play to bring the product to life. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Preliminary designs and prototypes for the Electron began in October 2015. The final prototype was made in December 2015. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Electron is made using aluminum sheet, aluminum shafting, and frosted acrylic sheet. The aluminum sheet and acrylic are cut using an OMAX waterjet machining center. Next, using a CNC milling machine and lathe, the aluminum is processed further. Once the aluminum parts are machined, they have a brushed finish applied on all exposed surfaces. The parts are then sent for anodizing. The aluminum is anodized in silver, black, or gold. A dimmable 12V LED strip is used as the source of illumination. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 250mm diameter x 114.3 mm Color: Anodized Clear, Black or Light Gold Lamping: LED strip 12V Lumens 840, 3000K, 8.4 watts Dimmable LED Driver TAGS: Wall Sconce, LED, Light, Lighting, Modern, futuristic, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The electron - a subatomic particle with a negative elementary electric charge - is the inspiration for the light that has been developed and titled "Electron" CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge - as always - was development. Developing a continuous path within the acrylic diffuser for the LED strips, while avoiding shadowing with the hidden fasteners was a formidable challenge. An additional obstacle to overcome was developing a way to attach the arm that connects the Electron ring to the wall-mounting plate, and creating a path for the wire to power up the LED - while still having hidden fasteners.
