DESIGN NAME: Atelier J-AR
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Art Studio
INSPIRATION: Angus Yip, Tsoi Wai-kuen, Derrick To and Wyan Yeung Li-shung co-founded an extracurricular group in 2013 and the group became a registered firm, Atelier J-AR Limited (AJ-AR), in 2015. It is a public art studio that advocates ideas relating to the "Juxta" architectural fields. AJ-AR has participated actively in social installation art exhibitions since 2013. The team is passionate about architecture in a wider and comprehensive context, studying ideas that are often overlooked in the built environment around people. In their research studio, they focus on the phenomenal relationships among man-made tangibles (objects & environment) and the behaviours of people who fall near to, alongside or close to them, with the goal of reconnecting people with the environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The works produced by Atelier J-AR (AJ-AR) are extraordinary. The studio creates works that accommodate with the local's eyes. The use of bamboo has been made their design unique. This sustainable material has given an identity to the Hong Kong construction industry. It has also given an iconic signature for AJ-AR's works. The studio is keen to explore further with the Hong Kong identity with its local material for future architectural pieces.
Also, the strengths between four principle architects are phenomenal. Beside architecture, they are also strong at graphic design, fashion design, interior design and material explorations. They have realised the importance in different criteria in the design and build aspects. They looked deeply into the relationship with people and create spaces which would suitable for them to enjoy and use.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As a group of local architects, we pick Hong Kong as our dream city because it's history and our memory. A city without sediment of history is monolithic. Massive urban renewal accelerate the vanishing of urban fabric. That's why we want to do something for the society, focus on something “juxta”: something alongside the community we live in, something alongside the history we go through. Thus, we work with the community or social organisations who aim to create an vibrant society. We perceive that as a way of saving and recreating our dream city.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Atelier J-AR enjoys the frequent discussions with the local communities to seek for their needs. For examples, the talented buskers in Hong Kong does not have a lot of opportunities to perform on stage with a crowd of people to pay attention to their music. The bamboo pavilion project, "Pop-up Theatre" (2015-2016), has given the chance for the audience to realise the different sound rings around our cosmopolitan city with elegance filled in our ears.
CHALLENGE: Atelier J-AR looks deeply in the social aspect of Hong Kong. Hong Kong people is less likely to accept new things comparing with the westerns. The design development never really seen for the outsiders. They hardly understand the importance of arts would improve the townscape in Hong Kong. However, it has been giving some values in such aspects in the recent years.
For pavilion construction, the bamboo scaffolding masters only use their own traditional technique and unwilling to explore and investigate new technology or construction method. From the successful discussion between the studio and the bamboo masters, they created innovative building technique that would comply with their design and also not loosing the traditional bamboo weaving structures. The studio is keen to inject new technology back into the skilled older generation to create a whole new world.
