DESIGN NAME: Madame Waffle at IOI City Mall
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Artisan Waffle Cafe
INSPIRATION: Elegantly warm and welcoming, Madame Waffle maintains a wood-toned palette that adds in a subtle touch of Japanese contemporary. The filament bulb lighting and black metal structure, on the other hand, infuses an industrial look that balances the overall design concept to Madame Waffle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Madame Waffle, a Japanese inspired artisan waffle cafe. The design is developed with an iconic Japanese minimalist streamlined wood structures and the combination of industrial metal structures. The open space is optimized with natural daylighting to create a cosy seating area along with the main preparation station.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Imagine the site comes with a large glass wall facing the greens from the exterior and a main corridor where crowd passing by in the interior. The layout was planned in a way that the service and preparation counter faces the shoppers walkway to make them welcomed and mouth watering witnessing how waffles were made, while the diners gets to dine with a view facing the panoramic view from the huge glass windows. On the other hand, the preparation bar were projected in two lines, in order to create an efficient and productive operation that benefits the preparation precess, especially during the peak hours.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project commenced in February 2015 and wrapped up in March 2015 in IOI City Mall at Putrajaya, Malaysia.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mild steel and timber were implemented as the major design elements for this project. The combination of both material is best to represent the modern Japanese architectural's design spirit. With the advantage of natural daylighting at site, it certainly emphasised the contrasting characteristic of the mild steel & timber structure. The design speaks even louder as the application of timber (wood) is best placed under the natural sunlight.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Being different is the main intention and encouragement behind designing Madame Waffle the way it is. Learning the fact that most local food chain brands were either lacked of identity in terms of branding or whether or not it is design, we aimed to fill our design with distinct characteristics that speaks for the branding identity and product itself. Using the star product as our design inspiration, we infused the qualities of a waffle into our design that goes long with the space. As a whole, we intend to design a space that tells a story, has a purpose and able to catch the attention of the passerby. Also, inspired by Ar. Kengo Kuma's philosophy, a design should not only represent an object, but a space that builds connection and interaction between the users and the surrounding.
CHALLENGE: Convincing the client to agree with our design approach is our main obstacle, and of course to keep the design in line with the client's budget comes secondly for this particular project. Due to the restricted budget given, it was rather hard for us to create a fancy design with robust structural and finishing elements. Thus, keeping back on track to our main design intention, we looked back into shaping a space that at least comes with its own identity in lined with the brand and by all means comfortable enough for the customers to spend their quality time here.
