DESIGN NAME: AR WONDERS
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Educational toy
INSPIRATION: The Dinosaur DNA series, proudly presented by 4M, is a range of like-no-other products that will inspire young minds and unleash their imagination. The fusion of both physical and digital play gives users an unforgettable experience with the products.
Dinosaur DNA is a series of creative and educational toy products that combines hands-on fun with virtual excitement, bringing brand new play experience to children aged 8 and up. The product series let users explore the fun of being paleontologists, and bring prehistoric dinosaurs "back to life" before their very eyes. The series carries three items by far, namely Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: AR Wonders are series of products which facture Augmented Reality (AR) technology with our most popular Dig a Dinosaur products.
Kids can imagine being a paleontologist to dig up and build a glow dino skeleton from a plaster block with provided tools. Collect a buried test tube of dinosaur DNA stickers. Order the DNA correctly by placing the stickers on cardboard. Scan the completed DNA chain (AR code) into a smartphone or tablet with an app. A life-sized 3D dinosaur will spring to life on the screen.
Kids can take photos or a video with the dino and share them via social media or email. Fun facts can be learnt from the app.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: AR Wonders is a combination of traditional toy and AR technology.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dinosaur DNA pairs with an innovative app, DinoCodes. Users can make use of a smart device (applicable for Apple and Android devices), with the DinoCodes App installed, to recognise the completed AR play mats. Through the in-app AR technology, a virtual 3-dimensional dinosaur will be recreated right upon the AR play mat on the display of the device. Users can interact with the virtual dinosaur at all angles in the real environment. The App equips with various functions that allow users to take real-time dinosaur mega movies and photos, and then instantly share their creation via social media or email. It is a great way for children to display their story-telling skills and creative thinking.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our mission is to develop fun and meaningful play experience that nurtures children’s interests with educational toys.
We treasure the values that traditional toys bring to children. On the other hand, we are also aware of the board application of intellectual technology in schools and learning centers. It inspired us to use the AR technology as a highlight to stimulate children’s imagination and creativity by taking our most popular traditional dinosaur digging activities into the 21st century.
The challenge of this design activity is how to make a balance between traditional toy and the intellectual technology. Finally we decided to develop the AR Wonders series which facture AR technology with our most popular Dig a Dinosaur products: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and Stegosaurus. The products can not only let kids experience the fun of being a paleontologist through the digging activities but also enjoy the virtual excitement.
CHALLENGE: AR, or Augmented Reality, is a technology that integrates digital information such as images, sounds or videos with the user’s environment in real time.
The hardiest part of this design activity is to develop the computer-generated dinosaurs which can be viewed and interacted in 360 degrees via the AR technology.
