DESIGN NAME: Impulse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: Traveling has become more and more popular nowadays. People take trips around the world not only to get away, but to explore, meet new people, and experience different cultures. One of the most rewarding traveling experience comes from the unexpected. There are a lot of travel guides and websites available, but none of them is focus on the spontaneity of traveling. My mission for Impulse is crafting an experience for this type of serendipity, for travelers to create stories of their own.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Traveling is seeing and exploring different cultures and places with your own eyes. The most rewarding part of a trip usually comes from the unexpected and being spontaneous. Impulse is a mobile app that helps you explore places to go and activities to do spontaneously based on your emotions. Using speech recognition and artificial intelligence, IMPULSE will suggest various experiences that are happening now close to your location. Find your serendipity with IMPULSE.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The homepage of the application has a recording button, where users can input what they’re feeling right now, and based on the input, the app will suggest a range of activities close to where the user’s location, and provide directions on how to get there. Users can swipe through and explore the now and happening events that are happening in the neighborhood. After completing some activities, the app will show you what you have done in the homepage, encouraging you to keep being adventurous.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2014 and finished in May 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Extensive research about the traveling and hospitality industry was done to get insights on how do people travel, what are they looking for while traveling, why they travel, and what difficulties they encounter along the journey. Initial sketches of solutions are tested with target audience for feedback in terms of usability and desirability. Feedbacks were later on being integrated into the execution.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I did remote research online about the traveling industry and the scale and scope of the market. I wrote down the user journey of a traveler from planning, commuting, discovering, to returning, and list out the needs and pain points the traveler will face. I also did a series of interviews to see how travelers are doing to try to solve the problem. I found out a lot of travelers are in short of time in terms of planning, but actually doing less planning often leads to moments of surprise, which happens less with a detailed plan. As a result, I decided to focus on coming up with a solution that helps travelers embark on a journey with freedom and spontaneity.
CHALLENGE: It was a fun but also difficult process researching for Impulse. There are already a lot of competitors in the market who are trying to better the traveling experience, but what other pain points or needs of the travelers have not been solved or taken into consideration? After discovering surprises are one of the biggest rewards in traveling, it’s interesting to look into the different possibilities of spontaneous moments that can happen during a trip.
