FORWARD / BEHIND
Ispire by antelope horn and base on round-backed armchair, cantilever arm give a vacant space under the seat back so when people sit that they will not feel oppressed. To combine traditional construction methods with organic elements,so that design(Forward)with craft(Behind)can complement each other.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Return to the basic elements of the chair, to simplify structure and using wooden tenon to achieve the strength of cantilever armchair.
To reinterpret the vocabulary of Nordic design, simple but focus on detail.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
FORWARD / BEHIND means design(Forward)with craft(Behind)can complement each other. Using traditional construction methods to create a modern chair. It's a chair which will attract your attention and when you sit in, you will know every design details were after careful consideration.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in July 2013 in Taichung and finished in April 2014 in Taichung, and was exhibited in Taichung Cultural &Creative Industries Park and Taipei World Trade Center in May 2014. In August 2014 was exhibited in Taipei Clove Boutique Coffee.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Danish designer Hans J.Wegner said ：「 It was rather a continuous process of purification, and for me of simplification, to cut down to
the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat and combined top rail and arm rest.」Trying to simplify the structure of the chair , using square tenon and wedge tenon to achieve the strength of cantilevered arm. For me, the chair is a miniature building.When someone enter into the space,the building is completed.

Chair dimensions - Width 590mm x Depth 590mm x Height 760mm.

Research for this project was based on round-backed armchair.Chinese round-backed armchair was in the early Ming dynasty.Chinese round-backed armchair was representative of identity status.I consulted human factors engineering and did many tests and prototypes for data collection.I used the data to reform the traditional round-backed armchair.Include the arm of the chair and the seat back of the chair and the curve of the seat back, all those dimensions were for a final goal, to create a modern and comfortable chair.
The main challenges were the structure and the form of the chair.In order to achieve the strength of cantilevered arm, used traditional construction methods with two tenons.By kept adjusting let each curve and surface to fit.
