DESIGN NAME: The Auroma One
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Machine
INSPIRATION: Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water. With more than 1.4 billion cups of coffee consumed around the world each day, convenient coffee making has recently come at a high environmental cost. In 2013, scientific investigation reveals that unrecyclable plastic pods already circulates the earth more than 10 times. Due to the large amounts of waste generated, we designed the Auroma One with the intention of reducing the large amount of waste generated by single serve coffee machines.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Auroma One is a fully automatic single serve coffee maker. Its advanced patent pending technology allows users to experiment with different brew settings. The Auroma makes the perfect cup of coffee by controlling variables such as grind size, temperature, coffee to water ratio and total dissolved coffee. With built in sensors, it can precisely monitor the user’s taste profile and automatically adjust brewing parameters to replicate an individual's taste preference.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Auroma One is equipped with a simple interface, which works as a stand-alone unit, or with extra features using the accompanying smartphone app. The Auroma One was designed in a way that allows anyone who loves coffee to make a great cup even if they don't know a single thing about coffee brewing. Simply press brew and users can enjoy the freshest cup tailored to them. Users can also set the Auroma One to brew coffee right when their alarm goes off or alert them when the beans get low. To complete this seamless interaction, the Auroma automatically rinses after each brew. The Auroma can be used with pre-ground beans, or with a modular grinder for whole beans.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December, 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia and was exhibited in Portland Coffee fest in October, 2015. It was successfully funded on Kickstarter in January, 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Auroma is designed to reflect craft coffee and coffee culture typologies in appearance and materiality. A key element of the design was to keep as many components of the coffee brewing visible, allowing users to experience the freshness of coffee as well as witness the coffee blooming process in the brewing chamber. All the sensors have been designed to tightly pack beneath the durable stainless steel enclosure to reveal a simple and clean finish. The water reservoir is made from borosilicate glass.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was divided into two phases. The goal of the first phase is to understand average consumers and coffee professionals well enough to formulate meaningful questions. The methodology used is research in online communities and product reviews. For the second phase, the goal is to understand them in details and 'be on the same page'. The methodology used is a combination of anonymous interviews as well as researching the materials produced by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).One of the results yielded was that although some people are aware of and do like 'quality coffee' as defined by coffee professionals, they struggle to make the same coffee at home, causing them to lean towards convenient but unsustainable options. This is primarily because of the different brewing variables needed to be controlled in the process.
CHALLENGE: Some creative challenges in the process of developing the Auroma was the social perspective. First and foremost, the definition of 'quality coffee' varies from one group of people to another. Coffee professionals judge coffee based on very thorough scientific processes all the way from plantation, handling, processing, roasting, packaging to finally brewing. Since the work is mostly carried out behind the scene, the majority's perception of 'quality coffee' is mostly driven by big corporation's marketing campaign – many of whom do not hold the same scientific standard to coffee preparation. The lack of awareness is an opportunity for design to redefine 'quality coffee' by showing off the carefully prepared ingredients without the use of plastic packaging and using coffee science in the brewing process.
