DESIGN NAME: Compass
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk
INSPIRATION: The idea was to make a functional yet unusual-looking working desk for my own design studio.
Inspired by the perfect form of a technical instrument, this desk creates a comfortable workspace for one or two people .
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “The Compass”, a working desk for architects and designers.
This desk creates a comfortable workspace for one or two people and provides an opportunity to draw on a sloped surface thanks to a simple mechanism, which transforms part of the top into a drawing board with a fixed 20 degree angle.
The shape of the support legs resembles two pairs of compasses. Many metal details were used in line with the idea of a technical drawing tool.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The top with five sliding drawers and angled drawing board is made of two parts hinged together, which allows to fold, move or transport it easily.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea was developed in 2011 in Moscow. From a quick initial sketch and design work to producing detailed and executive drawings, the whole design process took almost two months; with further three moths spent on making the wooden and metal parts.
