| DESIGN NAME: Lymed Dog PRIMARY FUNCTION: Canine pressure garment INSPIRATION: Lymed has manufactured and designed pressure garments for human applications since 1993 with the goal of improving the quality of every-day life for all its clients. As a natural progression of skills and manufacturing techniques, Lymed was inspired to transform a highly functional and tested Lymed medical garment into a renowned design item, meant for canines. A first in its medical field, Lymed's design language is a match for its quality - strong, bold and different. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lymed Dog medical garments are individual, custom-made pressure garments. Products are studied and can be used to calm the dog, to treat different neurological disorders and affect the ability to re-focus and self-appease. They can be used e.g. in treating sound sensitivity, fears, anxieties and hyperactivity. The clientele of Lymed Dog products are, e.g., police canine units, service and guide dogs, detection and rescue dogs or racing and competing dogs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As studied with Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki, the pressure garment has an effect on dog behavior. Medical pressure, and how it is constructed, plays a pivotal role in the results of a pressure garment. Only achieved by measuring each dog individually, the measurements are then transformed into patterns and the design is applied to each garment. After manufacturing the garments, which are hand-cut and hand-sewn, are given to dog owners for use with detailed instructions. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Lymed Dog garments have been in development since 2011 in Tampere, Finland and the design was finalized for sales in late 2015. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Techniques for manufacturing the Lymed Dog design incorporate calculating the physical pressure exerted into the object with the properties of the textile, in relation to the dog's individual measurements. Combining mathematics, physics, textile know-how and visual design, Lymed Dog garment contains medically calculated pressure, is breathable and soft while retaining pressure exceptionally well. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Custom-made product manufactured after the dog's own measurements. Each garment requires a minimum of 25 individual measurements from the dog itself. The maximum amount of individual measurements per garment is over 40 measurements, depending on the shape of the garment. TAGS: compression, pressure, dogs, compression suit, pressure garment RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The well-being of a dog plays an important role in the design process. After initial case studies, followed by a Vet Faculty study along with now-ongoing studies, the medical applications of pressure treatment in dogs had to be mapped out. After that, the garment and design was defined through functionality - movement, mobility, activity and somatic, muscular and lymphatic system of dogs. The design of the product cannot be compromised over medicality and functionality, and the other way around. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge with the product was to combine all its functionalities and visuality with a custom-made product that is individually manufactured per each order.
