DESIGN NAME: Marathon Boy Bookends
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookends
INSPIRATION: We chose Ancient Greece-constant, beautiful, authentic and true- as a source of inspiration. Our design is based on a new strong international decor trend, called cultural storytelling. We aimed to create a unique object that would tell the story of Greece, through harmonically blending eternity with modernity and the magic of the timeless myths with the spirit of the 21st century. Influenced by the concept of beauty, health, strength, victory and wisdom of ancient Greece, we created the Marathon Boy Bookends.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is unique as it promotes the ancient Greek history through contemporary design. It does not just serve aesthetics and functionality, but a strong idea. This creation is a Golden Era messenger whispering the story of a victorious young athlete. Combining innocence with physical perfection, the Marathon Boy is a reminder that belief in oneself is a prerequisite for success and personal fulfillment. It is exceptional as it enriches the cultural design industry and the notion of cultural gift.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design aim was not just to create a product, excellent in terms of aesthetics that would keep books in perfect order, but to promote the story of an important ancient Greek young figure today. What is culture if not a series of stories told from one generation to another? This youth seems wise beyond his years, knowing that no victory comes without effort. He savors the victor’s praise with modesty and grace.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Marathon Boy Bookends were initially designed in September 2014. The design was first exhibited in January 2015 at the Maison and Objet show in Paris. It was exhibited again in new colors at Maison and Objet in January 2016. The design was included in the cover of the magazine Elle Decoration, Special International Edition, published in January 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product has been designed and produced in Greece. It is handmade and made out of ceramine, an ecological material, friendly towards both humans and the environment. Ceramine is chemically produced to imitate the properties and the effects of the materials used in antiquity. The material is a mixture of earthenware.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Marathon Boy Bookends are a set of two pieces. Mirroring the distinctiveness of each side of the human brain and body, each piece is unique, as it has been sculptured separately to symbolize this human characteristic. Their dimensions are 27.5 x 7 x 17 centimeters each. It comes with well designed packaging. The design is realized in a diverse range of colors.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Historical and cultural research has been made to realize this design project. Secondary research was conducted during the conceptual stage of the project. The design in based on a Greek bronze sculpture of the Marathon Boy, found in the Aegean Sea almost 100 years ago. The sculpture dates back to around 340 BC. Experiments were made during the design stage in regards with the dimensions and functionality of the design. Different colors were also applied in order to decide which palette is the most successful.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to evoke the historical heritage of Ancient Greece today through design, as well as to successfully integrate the historical perspective of our initial research with the aesthetics and the functionality during the design process.
