DESIGN NAME: Electron Chair
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: As a sculptor himself, the author is in constant search for inspiration from biological forms, structures and constructions. His main interest is in “tensegrity”structures and their application in design and sculpture. For the Electron Chair project he used the accumulated experience to master the space forms in a puzzle structure. In this chair Konstantin Achkov aimed not only for innovation in production technology, joints and assembly, but also for innovative and memorable vision of symmetrical forms which were not used by now. The chair itself represents more a modern plastic art than standard four-legs chair.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Electron Chair is a flat-pack, puzzle chair with unusual shape and unique joints. It easily transforms from a stool into a chair. The backside of the chair is stuck into the base and locks with the help of the unique joints. The chair comes in a very compact flat pack and is extremely easy to assemble. The unique qualities of the design is the innovative shape that differentiate from the standard chair and the extreme strength of the construction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The end user has the possibility to buy the chair in a compact flat pack with handle, designed especially for it and to assemble it by following the instructions and using the included wooden instrument. A choice whether to assemble it only as a stool or transform it easily into a chair by adding the back is left to the customer. After that the user can enjoy the comfort of the textile sitting and back and the strong ergonomic construction.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2014 with the developing of the first prototype of the chair. After publication in numerous magazines, the first prototype was developed further by separating the back elements from the stool. The first prototype was shown on One Design Week 2014, Plovdiv Bulgaria.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: From more than 6 years the designer specializes in puzzle furniture and interlocking systems. His aim is to design furniture which is produced with minimal operations based on the CNC cutting routers which is accomplished by nesting all the details in one sheet 18 mm plywood. In this way the production process consist only of CNC cutting, finishing and packaging.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main purpose of the project was to achieve extremely user friendly assembly while preserving the strength of the construction and the chair itself and finally to accomplish a very compact flat pack. For this reason the designer made a thorough research on all available puzzle CNC cut joints, the qualities of the plywood to bend and sprung as the snap joints hold the construction and resist the pressure. Finally the designer came out with completely new and original snap joints which are compact, ease to use and beautiful in shape. Different types of the joints were further developed and two were used in the Electron Chair project – the main which holds the construction and a longer model to come through the elements and hold the backside to the base. Other very important issue to resolve was size of the package. By removing the back from the base the designer achieved smaller and more compact flat pack. Many prototypes of the backside were made to achieve the best possible strength and ergonomics.
CHALLENGE: One of the biggest challenges of this project was to create a snap joints that is in the same time beautiful, strong and easy to use. Other difficulty to overcome was the size of package which was also achieved by separating the back from the construction. The comfort and ergonomics are provided by the textile membranes which are used for the seat and back and correction of the height and the inclination in some details.
