DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Move

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Rocking Chair

INSPIRATION:
The idea behind Move is in the organic shapes that wood takes in nature and in the study of geometry in the dynamics of solid bodies. The project was based on months of research on aerodynamics and on the movement of the wind in the vegetable world. Its design, that doesn't simulate nature but interprets it, is the aesthetic synthesis of this double research as well as an excellent example of the modern culture of ebony.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Move is a rocking armchair made by 30 solid pieces of ash wood. It owes its remarkable complexity to a double curved and closed structure. The first structure supports the seat and the backrest, while the second supports both and allows the movement. The connection is in the lower part where the two structures touch each other at their greatest curving point (statically a highly critical point). The lightness of the curved parts and the dynamism give this rocking armchair its unparalleled and unique beauty.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Move is a rocking armchair designed with an ergonomic seat that is perfect for relaxing and resting but it was also designed for perfect comfort during conversation: the backrest has a polyurethane convex shape with variable density that helps the diaphragm relax because it supports the spinal column. It gives a perfect comfort also when you are drinking coffee, tea…

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Move was originally started at Giorgetti SPA’s Design Office in Meda in May 2013 and it was completed in April 2014, when it was officially exhibited at the International Milan Furniture Fair. Over 100 pieces have been sold all over the world.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Move is made by 30 solid pieces of ash carved with numerical control cutters. To obtain close structures that could statically support load and dynamic efforts, an aluminum die casting mold was used for each piece so as to guarantee section levels during assembly with mistakes lower than 0,01%.The backrest and the seat are in fiberglass and the padding is in polyurethane and coldfoamed.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The designer’s research was mainly based on Leonardo da Vinci's studies of nature, especially the movements of the apocalypses and natural disasters as far as aerodynamics and a collection of his drawings on plants, trees, branches, and fronds as for the study of the curved geometries so as to give the object a natural beauty.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part in designing Move was the control and development of the drawing of the two curved shapes, that never have a constant section and are also always elliptical, which was resolved in the 3D modelling. The control of the static nature of the structures subject to static and dynamic loads was just as complex (the armchair is ISO certified for resistance). High technology and engineering efforts were used for this, also to cater for the needs of mass production.

NAME:
Studio La Ross

PROFILE:
Studio La Ross was opened in January 2001 on the 3rd floor of Villa Pugliatti, a house designed by the leading Italian architect ICO PARISI. Its location is the result of years of friendship and collaboration with the architect and his wife Luisa who first had the idea of designing and building my studio as an autonomous space within the family home. This deeply intensified my professional passion for design and architecture as the studio and the house create a continuity between work and life, and this is important because a designer’s work, when done with passion, is like a breath that can never be separated from everyday life. Studio La Ross uses the best tools and equipment to design and do advanced research on both contemporary and future trends and styles thanks to a highly skilled and efficient team of external collaborators who interact with the studio in every design stage.
