DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
NAVii

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Customer Service & Inventory Management

INSPIRATION:
NAVii was inspired to by the clean, simple German design of the 90s. As NAVii is meant to emulate friendliness, we wanted to maintain NAVii's design to be as simple as possible. We used rounded edges and clean silhouettes, taking in some distinct humanoid features and but queitly melding it seamlessly into the product to keep it inviting and warm.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
NAVii is the first smart robot of its kind, bringing retail into the digital world. Incorporating the latest advanced technologies, NAVii is able to autonomously navigate around retail spaces, communicating with customers to lead them to located items in the store. It also helps store employees accurately manage shelf inventory by providing them up-to-date stock information.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
NAVii is a retail robot and autonomously roams around the store when it is not in use. When it senses a customer approaching, it raises its screen to an ergonomic height, greets him or her with "Hello, my name is NAVii. How may I help you today?", inviting him or her to use the screen. Customers can verbally ask or type in their search request, select the item they are looking for, and NAVii will gently lead the customer to the item's location. When it is on the move, NAVii lowers its screen back into resting position for safety, and avoid running into obstacles. When the item has been located, NAVii will announce, "We are here.", and ask, "Do you still need me?" If the customer has found his or her product, and no longer needs NAVii, it will thank the customer and continue roaming the retail space.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in September 2015, and finished in November 2015, in Silicon Valley, California.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Meta, Strategic and Service Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In its initial design stages, we used a series of mock up and iteration methods, including sketching, quick renders, and 3D printing to mockup our models. NAVii was manufactured through a variation of production methods. Its materials are sourced from China, and manufactured, assembled and tested in San Jose, California.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 18 inches x Length 27 inches x Height 60 inches Weight 200 lbs

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We spent a large amount of time understanding our clients' wants and needs, as well as interviewing and observing users (store's customers, inventory staff) to understand their habits, needs and wants. From our research, we gained insights and made quick and dirty prototypes to test our solutions, and to quickly build our robots.

CHALLENGE:
Given the complexity of the robot, we realized that having good collaboration between Design, Software and Hardware team was imminent to produce a proper product. Discussing with Engineering team, both hardware and software on every part of the design, and ensuring that everything worked together seamlessly was one of the biggest challenges during this journey. Socially, we also faced some difficulties of acceptance as some members of the public felt that the robot was going to take away jobs. However, a deeper understanding of the product will show that NAVii aids associates in the store. It frees up their time for more complex tasks and questions with, and saves them significant amount of time.
