DESIGN NAME: THE BIRTH
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting
INSPIRATION: This work, 'The Birth', is a chandelier inspired by the faint light which is said to emanate from the ovum at the precise moment of fertilization.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This work, 'The Birth', is a chandelier inspired by the faint light which is said to emanate from the ovum at the precise moment of fertilization.
By creating a sense of intimacy with one of the fundamental mysteries of life, my hope is that observers will be encouraged to re-think the significance of life itself.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: All the light bulbs are programmed to slowly blink, shining brightly only for a very brief moment. This cycle is an interpretation of wavelength change in the ovum during fertilization but at the same time is very similar to the rhythm of a beating heart. When you notice 'The Birth' you stop and wonder about the miracle of life, your own life.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2015 and finished in October 2015, and was exhibited in ANYTOKYO exhibition in October 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: No special technologies were used during the production process. Standard production techniques and materials can make 'The Birth'. I value simple systems and standard items.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 750mm diameter, 42 pieces 10W bulbs, frame is made by Aluminum plate.
PSE certification (Japanese Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 'At the moment of fertilization, eggs emit light'. After hearing this statement, my imagination was completely seized by this magical moment when life is created. At the moment of fertilization, the wavelength inside the egg changes. If light is a wavelength, I felt that those changes in the electric wavelength could be interpreted as 'light'. I saw that moment of fertilization through a microscope. What I noticed was not light but something grotesque yet beautiful, which did indeed appear to be shining.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was finding the right proportion of the frame and putting every light bulb inside. Also, because the cables are a vital part of the design their positions had to be planned and carefully put in place.
