DESIGN NAME: First
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: The First Table is inspired by the truss structures in engineering. Structures that achieve light but dependable construction and give a lot of freedom in the design process. It was a great experiment opportunity for us to use an approach typically used in civil engineering.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The First Table is a visual conundrum. Bold and exciting but still functional and sure-footed it is a statement piece with a distinct identity. It is made out of CNC cut plywood segmets. The seemingly complex construction is in fact very easy and logical to assemble.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table is transported "flat-pack". It is very easy to assemble, and doesn't require any technical knowledge. Any fixings (such as screws and nuts) are minimized.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design took around six months to complete, from initial drawings and models to the final prototype. The process took place in Sofia, Bulgaria.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design process began with a 3D image of a tree-like structure. At that time we didn't know the means to achieve it in reality. Later on we simplified the structure and came to the conclusion that the best way to achieve it is through CNC cut plywood elements and simple joints. What actually gives complexity to the structure is the interlacing of all the elements.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: material - birch plywood
product dimensions - 170/85/73cm.
package dimensions - 173/88/10cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research period of the design was focused on analyzing tree structures and truss engineering. After that a lot of technical research was done in order for us to choose the most appropriate technique for its realization. That included a research on CNC cutting and its characteristics.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge for every design is the realizing of an abstract idea with the means of technology. The process of modifying the idea while it acquires more and more concrete dimensions is a hard one. The biggest challenge is to avoid making any compromises in this process.
