DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
ShelfLamp

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lamp and shelf.

INSPIRATION:
This work was created mostly as a result of experimenting with the material. Recently I started to use concrete as a main material for interior lighting objects. My intention was the product to be the lightest possible despite the heaviness of the material and eventually this goal is achieved by creating the minimalistic form with a mirror on inside walls and by plastering the shape of extremely light material with concrete.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Multifunctional Shelflamp can be used as a floor or table based or as a wall lighting. If used as a shelf there may be placed various interior objects like plants, vessel, books etc. Those two pieces may be arranged in diverse combinations towards each other and towards the space. The mirror between the light source and inside walls creates the illusion of deep inner space due to the mirror reflections. Although concrete is quite heavy material, this work is rather light and comfortable to move

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Shelf Lamp aims to be a mobile lighting object. It consists of two parts which can be placed differently according to the user’s preferencies. In any case it can be used as a shelf for books, plants, vessel, etc. Shelf Lamp has quite simple hanging system making the user able to hang it on the wall. To the artist’s preference, Shelf Lamp is better to be placed in the minimalistic interior, on the floor or on the lower surface.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Duration: 2 weeks of a research proces and sketches, 2 week of realization including technical experiments and user testing. Location: Tbilisi, Georgia

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Material: Concrete, mirror, T4 fluorescent lamp(8watt), penoplast, wood. The distribution of the Shelf Lamp is divided into 4 steps: 1. The construction is bounded by wooden planks that will be the basic for the final shape of the artwork. The planks will be firmly mounted on each other to guarantee the firmness of the object. It will be pierced in the areas from which the electrical power cord must be provided to the bulb and it is attached to the lamp holder. 2. The foam plastic will be sticked to wooden planks to give a greater volume of artwork and at the same time not to add any extra weight. Though the foam plastic might not be even attached if it is not needed to have the object thick walls. Therefore, the pranks can be plastered directly by cement. 3. After that the wooden planks and foam plastics are processed in a special solution to be sticked well and although diluted solutions of cement covers the entire foam. 4. After 2 days the cement is dried and compressed after everything is dried the mirrors will be sticked on the two internal walls. Also the fluorescent lamp T4 can be attached and will be easily replaced any time with any color lights you want. The fluorescent lamps offer us different colors which is easy to get. Therefore the plug can be attached to the cord. The Shelf Lamp is operated at 220 watts. It include the wall holders. The holders will be sticked to the walls and then the lightning will be fixed from above.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Shelf Lamp is a design object created based on experience and observation which aims to be user friendly and to express the artist’s attitude towards the convergence of form and function. All the materials used were researched and experimented previously. Concrete - the main material truly expresses the character of Shelf Lamp. Nowadays a user prefers the products which are easily arrangeable, mobile and transformative, so a Shel Lamp is a brave light design project which is expected to be seen as an exceptional piece of light design of any modern interior.

CHALLENGE:
The idea of multifunctional lamp is basically inspired by the accelerated pace of the modern world, by the lack of space in homes and by the artist's aim to create the design object which can inspire the user to move, to rearrange the interior and to be creative.
