DESIGN NAME: Star
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Remote access video baby monitor
INSPIRATION: The busy parents of a toddler and twin babies behind Star know firsthand how it can be quite a juggling act to stay on top of what’s going on with the next generation. They also know that there’s more to smart baby monitoring than just hearing and seeing the child. That’s why they have invented an innovative, versatile baby monitoring system with HD-quality video streaming, alerts and online tools that help parents monitor, measure and stay connected.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Star is an innovative, versatile baby monitoring system with HD-quality video streaming, alerts and online tools that help parents monitor, measure and stay connected. The remote access video baby monitoring system is operated with a smartphone or a web browser, enabling live video feed of the child to be accessed with the smartphone anytime, from anywhere. It comes with many easy to use tools designed to help parents learn the baby’s needs and patterns and enable them to chronicle growth.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The video monitor is installed on a wall, about 6 ft high and about 3 ft away from the baby's crib. The monitor has a camera, a microphone, a sensor that activates the IR light if the room is dark, a temperature sensor and a speaker that doubles up as a nightlight. The monitor picks up if the child is crying or if there's a loud noise in the room, and transmits alerts to the parents' smartphones (and other phones if so desired). Alerts will also be sent if the battery is low, the connection is lost, or if the room temp is too high/low. At any time parents can use the app to see and hear the child in real time, also if they are not in the proximity of the home just as long as they have internet connection. Other users can also be granted access, for example the grandparents can use their smartphones or any browser to see and hear the child, or record messages, songs etc. to the child that the parents play at a time of their choosing.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2012 in Oulu, Finland, and the monitors are reaching manufacturing readiness in March 2016 in Oulu, Finland.

CHALLENGE: Fitting the components in the shape of the monitor was one challenge, and when that was overcome, the next challenge was re-designing the IR light after the original was deemed insufficient for its purpose. Implementing a more effective light was tricky, and after a number of tries we managed to do it with minimal changes to the original design.
