Pepper Spray Packaging
The newly updated mission statement inspired Mace Security International, Empowering your world through safety and security. It's important to us to offer the best safety and security products to our customers and that includes design that reflects that stance. Being more environmentally conscious was also a significant motivator. With this new packaging, we drastically decrease our PVC footprint, which we are very excited about.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
During 2015 it was decided it was time to overhaul the pepper spray packaging, which had been the same for many years. As a company, Mace Security International wanted to have a fresh design that was also more environmentally friendly and offered cost savings. This design reflects all of those while also being tamper-resistant. It perfectly reflects the updated branding that projects confidence, empowerment and strength.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
There are numerous benefits to the packaging update. Benefits include faster manufacturing speeds, cost savings and labor savings, elimination of current packaging manufacturing issues, and positive marketing and branding visuals.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The packaging project began in June of 2014 at the Mace Security International headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. Final samples of the new packaging were launched at the industry show, SHOT Show in Las Vegas, January 19th to 22nd. New packaging production will begin in February 2016 and be implemented as a rolling change across the many pepper spray products we have. We will start with the top selling products at our top retailers and move through the line.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Our pepper spray packaging currently is PVC clamshells with folded instructional paper inserts. The new design utilizes a proprietary self-sealing cohesive applied to paper board instead of a PVC clamshell. The blister cards will be sealed around a molded dome, which will hold the product tightly in place. The transition from full PVC clamshells to self-sealing blister cards drastically cuts down our plastic use.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Our current packaging is PVC clamshells with folded instructional paper inserts. The new transitions to a paperboard card with molded dome blister, which drastically reduces the PVC use. The dimensions are 114.3mm by 225.425mm. There are five different domes, which fit the various different pepper spray models. Where possible, the domes are fitted around the models, holding them tighter and providing a cleaner look. The tighter domes help make the packaging tamper-resistant.

The parameters of the project included a design that was tamper-resistant, was consistent with our current packaging dimensions and offered a refreshed and updated design with clear information; finding the best way to layout the information on the packaging to make it easy for the customer to understand the product and easy to compare multiple units when next to each other in a display. The new packaging will be implemented as a rolling change, with the most popular models updated in phase one.
The most difficult part was creating a tamper-resistant design in the current packaging dimensions. The existing packaging had the euro hang hole positioned off center, which meant we could not move the product to the center of the new packaging due to weight distribution bias. We tested numerous designs of domes with different flange designs. The final dome design has two flange extensions on each side with nubs that are locked in place. The locking design, combined with form fitted domes, created a very solid sealed package.
