DESIGN NAME: Card On Guard
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pool Antibacterial
INSPIRATION: Enough energy comes from the sun in 1 hour to meet the worlds energy needs for 1 year. Collecting, storing and using a fraction of it can provide 100 percent clean, constantly renewing energy in addition to replacing many other energy dependent processes. The problem has been that expensive, bulky, difficult to operate and maintain and inefficient equipment has been necessary to harness it until now.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Existing pool water treatment products involve either chemicals or electrical equipment. We developed a completely unplugged, easy to use, cost effective, chemical free solution that continuously captures, stores and reemits UV and Infrared light to inhibit bacteria growth replacing 50 to 100 percent of traditional pool/hot tub chemicals. The shark fin design simplifies this hard to believe product by focusing on the protection benefit in a form that is both functional and attractive.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Card On Guard captures, retains and radiates electromagnetic energy in the form of photons causing a photolytic action that creates low levels of free radicals that oxidize bacteria. To maximize both light and water exposure once in the pool, the frame incorporates weight and buoyancy elements so that one of the upper edges is above the water’s surface to catch wind and breezes to move Card On Guard around the pool or hot tub.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Branding and frame packaging project took 5 months once the solar cell card was completed and tested for effectiveness.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We wanted the product to have maximum exposure to both sun and water on both sides in addition to a method for moving the product around the pool. The frame is 2 sided and made of polypropylene with cavities inside to hold both the submersion elements (round steel washers) and flotation elements (foam). These opposing weight and float elements combined with holes on both sides of the frame allow water inside the frame causing it to sink into position in 5-10 seconds and remain very stable even in rough water.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We knew we had a very innovative, effective and practical antibacterial solar cell after hundreds of tests. But to launch a consumer product we needed attractive branding, packaging and product format to stand out. We shared evolutions in our design with pool and hot tub owners who had been part of testing the technology. The product has also won the 2015 Technology Innovator, Emerging Technology Awards 2015, Big Innovation 2015 and Red Dot 2016 Product Design awards.
CHALLENGE: All products in the pool water treatment industry involve either chemicals or electrical equipment. We wanted to develop a completely unplugged, easy to use, cost effective, chemical free solution. Beyond the technical challenge of creating a technology that did not yet exist, we faced consumer acceptance of a completely new technology. So it needed to be approachable versus confusing and intimidating.
