| DESIGN NAME: New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this renovation project was to play with the existing charm of ancient Chinese architecture by creating a game of light and shadow instead of lighting every element of the architecture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang is located in the town of Xiepu in the Zhenhai district of Ningbo. Built on the ancient site named Zhengshi Shiqifang, it covers an area of 50,000 sqm and has six guest room sections with 116 guest rooms. It is the largest most intact ancient architecture styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China with Ma Tau wallwatts, traditional Chinese courtyards, ancestral halls, opera stages, stone alleys and old houses. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As this is a hotel, its operation remains in the hand of the property management of the client. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The lighting design part of the project started on July 30, 2013 in Ningbo, China and the hotel opened on June 20, 2014. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mainly LED lighting fixtures for the exterior facade (small projectors, linear bars, street lights) combined with a few fluorescent lights for wall lamps and HIT for in-ground recessed lights. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Please see attached documents TAGS: LDPi, Ningbo, New Century, Resort, Shiqifang, Renovation, Lighting Design, Lighting Design Partnership International, China RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Experiments were an important factor in the realization of the facade lighting effect. By testing different lighting fixtures only could we determine what lighting effect would be most suitable not only in terms of beam angles, wattage and color temperature, but also how and where exactly to properly install the lighting fixtures on the existing walls. CHALLENGE: Being an ancient construction, CAD drawings were created from scratch for the facade and details of the New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang. Nevertheless, it was still necessary to be onsite to take pictures of the conditions before renovation (see attached file) and use them as part of the conceptual lighting design to show how it would look like after renovation by applying a new layer of lighting.
