DESIGN NAME: Shuttle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fabric
INSPIRATION: The project is inspired by the unique relationship between water and land and how they interconnect one another. With free flowing water movements and simplified outline of landscape, they come together to inspire and create new fabric.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shuttle is an essential device used in jacquard weaving which is the point of this project. In order to create the optimum visual effect while maintaining good contrast sensitivity, properties of fibres and fabric structures are critical factors influencing the final work. The project tries to show the innovation in textile field and meet chic design and delicate details for textures and stylish shaping.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The purpose is to provide a kind of untraditional jacquard woven fabric style but with a complex working procedure and long period. To summarise, there are two main steps. Step A is spinning. It is part of the textile manufacturing process where fibres are converted into yarn. Then step B, fabrics. It undergoes finishing processes such as washing, heat setting and alkalizing to become ideal work.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Mar 2015 and finished in June 2015 in Hangzhou, China. And it was exhibited in 9th Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo in Oct 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The processes used for making the project includes a combination of techniques such as dyeing, colour fixing, warp winding, twisting, weaving, washing, alkalizing, etc. The properties of warp yarn are 4.44tex, silver, 100% mulberry silk. As for weft yarns, one is 48s, purple, 100% wool. The other one is 5s, magenta, 95% acrylic 5% cotton fancy yarns.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Fabric 1240 mm (W) x 2100 mm (L). Garment 170/88A.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research for Shuttle is based on material application. Background notes about materials and jacquard woven fabrics provides a summary and snapshot of how the project works in progress. According to the abstract geometric pattern from nature, I tries to create the fabric rendered in delicate hues of magenta and purple, contrasting against silver piece that formed the final vignette. Silk, wool and fancy yarns are the ideal choices of materials that keep the finished garment as distinctive as possible.
CHALLENGE: The challenge is expressing the textures and portray richly with limited colours. Shuttle motions are the key factors which involves the design conception for the weave structures. In addition, coming out the anticipatory effect is impossible at the first try. Inevitably, I designed weaving structures for many times to achieve the best results.
