DESIGN NAME: TURBOCRAFT THUNDERCLAP
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Boat
INSPIRATION: Our inspiration comes from the boating and automotive worlds. The curvy lines are reminiscent of iconic cars of the 30s, such as the Bugatti Atlantic, and classic runabout boats of the 60s, such as the Riva Olympic. Other distinctive elements such as the central fashion plate are inspired by the modern automotive muscle cars such as the Audi R8. A luxury product is mostly an emotional purchase and our aim for this luxury craft is to create instant emotion and differentiation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The thunderclap design reflects a brand with a unique pedigree in the marine industry as an innovation pioneer. The design translates the uniqueness of the brand and oozes elegance and refinement expected by customers. Everything onboard is conceived with comfort and security of use in mind: from the sea stairs for easy boarding to wrap-around windscreen and recessed sun bed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Thunderclap is a luxury day boat and tender where comfort and functionality are paramount. The use of waterjet propulsion brings unique characteristics: low maintenance, unrivaled maneuverability, security and lower fuel consumption. The deck layout organized around the central piece of furniture provides a functional circulation pattern. The counter stern serves as of design distinguisher but also adds more than one meter of extra surface used both as a welcome pad and swim platform.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The initial sketches by the head yacht designer date back 2011 and the project was officially unveiled on January 2015 with instant positive reaction from the public. The design has received tremendous press coverage in the last 6 months in many lifestyle and design magazines such as The Superyacht Design.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design had to be faithful to the innovation heritage of the brand that was the first ever to introduce waterjet propulsion. Therefore the boat is built with sustainable and modern materials. The hull is made of red cedar cold-molded wood and resins while the deck and interior cabin are integrating bio-sourced flax fibers that give extra energy efficiency and noise insulation properties. This will be a world-premiere for a boat of this quality.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design brief was to blend timeless elegance, purity of form and functionality. The inspiration came from the 1930's sport cars, 1960's classic boats and the extensive yachting experience of the design team.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging aspect was to develop a dynamic and clean hull lines integrating the counter stern that requires extra research to meet naval architecture requirements.
