Tasty Congee & Wantun Noodle Shop

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Restaurant

INSPIRATION:
Interpreting the visual form of Wantun noodles, a series of long vertical metallic strands enclose a semi porous staircase inside. The slats rise up the double height space and elegantly blend in with the sloped roof. They create an elevated drama which can be seen from the exterior, and entice customers to discover the upper level of the restaurant.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The brief for the 8,000sqft flagship restaurant for Tasty Congee & Wantun Noodle Shop, located at Swire Properties Daci Temple Sino Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu China, was to celebrate the 70 years old Wontun noodle brand by upgrading its historical street food status to a contemporary international identity. The new space is a cultural exchange between east and west, old and new, in Chengdu China.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The key challenge was to create an ideal experience that could cater to a wide variety of customers. The design should entice and impress elite highend customers without being intimidating or aggressive. It requires a careful aesthetic approach that responds to local Chinese customers as well as global international visitors. The design should create a holistic customer experience, through the large mixture of single height, double height, flat and sloped three dimensional volumes created by the building’s geometries.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in November 2014 in Chengdu China and finished in March 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A back lit copper mesh rear wall can be clearly seen by customers from the street, and highlights the open kitchen where specialist chefs can display their noodle making techniques. The main feature is an impressive 4.8m long marble table installation that can be seen upon entering, located in the center of the double height space. Inspired by traditional Chinese garden rock art, the table is full of playful curves and appears to be floating. It functions as a dynamic 18 person sharing table for multipurpose events.

A 8,000sqft restuarant across two levels with an internal staircase clad in marble and metal slats.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The design was driven by contextual narratives derived from the Chengdu leisurely culture within the Sichuan archaeological context. In Chengdu, people enjoy a contemporary lifestyle of eating outdoors and watching the world go by in a setting that is often juxtaposed in between layers of time.

Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop

PROFILE:
Mr. Ho Koon Ming succeeded his father’s trade in 1984. He carries on Ho Hung Kee’s pursuit for noodle perfection and his father’s prominent ideals on wantun noodles. In September 1996, the “Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop” was founded in Happy Valley in hopes to glorify his father’s dedication and passion for wantun noodles. Later on in December 2002 and January 2007, branches were established in U Food Whampoa and IFC Central respectively. Additional “Tasty” branches were then established at Elements Tsim Sha Tsui and the Hong Kong International Airport. In recent year, our efforts were put on rapid expansion to oversea markets such as Shanghai, Chengdu, Tianjin China and Malaysia. Our dedication and passion toward culinary standards shine splendidly in various parts of the world. In 2001, “Tasty” even won the ‘Gold with Distinction Award’ in the noodles category from the ‘Best of the Best Culinary Awards’ held by the Hong Kong Tourism board and then certified as a ‘Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme’ accredited restaurant in 2004. Since 2009 till this day, both “Ho Hung Kee” and “Tasty” are recommendations of the Michelin Guide judging panel, “Ho Hung Kee’ was even honored as an ‘One Star Restaurant’.
