DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Qleek

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Music Player

INSPIRATION:
Qleek comes from the culmination of the Digital and Physical into a quiet simple and inquisitive music player. Inspired from Naoto Fukasawa's CD player, it brings the user invisible, insightful and liberating human interactions with its music.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Qleek is a beautiful way to play, share and collect your music. It features your favorite songs and artists in your living room, your office or your store.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Simply put a Qleek on its player and it instantly plays your favorite playlists, artists or shows.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in early 2013 in Paris. Followed a year of R&D in France and the team moved in February 2015 to Boston to join Bolt.io one of the best places to build physical products in the US.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Because Music is an organic experience, we used wood to represent the physical incarnation of digital songs, playlists and artists. Qleeks are made from sustainable beechwood sourced in France.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The Qleek Player : 160 mm x 160 mm x 25 mm The Qleeks Hexagons : 80 mm x 70 mm x 12 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
After a successful crowdfunding campaign and surveying more than 400 participants about their new music habits, we have discovered the importance of what is missing in the age of the all digital. 55% of respondents highlighted the importance of the physical collection and the library as a missing point in the way they experience music. The tactile feel of records and the rituals of playing them came up as another important emotional feature that lacks in our modern habits. Qleek came up to fill in what we are losing with screen-based music by providing a record-like experience when enjoying playlists or artists without losing the pros of living in the digital era.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge while developing Qleek was to provide users enough room for creativity when creating their Qleek covers, while keeping a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing experience during use and when displaying the product. The hexagonal shape is an interesting answer to this challenge as it enable modularity while keeping a harmonious connection within the user's Qleeks library.

PROFILE:
Qleek is the concretization of a fruitful encounter between a Ph.D. in Computer Science, an Embedded System Magician and a Designer from Les Ateliers Paris.
