DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Emotional Object #018: ExCentric

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Office furniture

INSPIRATION:
In a logical world, this line of furniture would be very simple. Structure and volumes would be aligned, and this would be another beautiful office. But then, this would be boring to make. Something that was already made in the 30's of last century. So, we broke a perfect design... The inspiration came because... We can! We can make things that goes beyond function, we can make something that makes us smile every time that we go in our workplace, and things that provoke others when they see it.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
ExCentric is a line of office furniture for.. Well.. People that think outside the box. Structure and elements are misaligned and provoke a sense of un equilibrium, remembering us all that there is another way to see reality. For now, the line is composed by a desk, a coffee table, a bookcase and a sideboard. For each and every one of them are four kind of wood finishes, as well as other customizations. Other technologies can be inserted in the desk, like a personal computer, WiFi or Bluetooth.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This line of furniture does not have a special way to use it. Just normal functional office.. That makes you think and smile... However, there are some secrets to this. The desk, for instance, has obviously embedded sockets to charge computers or tablets but it also was the possibility to have a computer inside it as well as bluetooth capabilities and personal WiFi. All of this without unnecessary exposed cables. As a manufactured piece, technology can be inserted to make a clean looking office.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This line of furniture began its design on March 2014, in Porto, Portugal. After several prototypes and the tuning of special tools to assure that all the pieces would have the right quality and feel, the line was ready to production in December 2015. The final models were concluded in early January 2016 and presented at Maison et Objet in Paris in January this year.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Excentric is handcrafted by artisans who are expert in their craft. We had to developed tools and perfected some techniques to cut the steel and wood with the angles that the design required. So, laser cutting was one of the tools we used. In summary, Excentric uses the best of our artisans knowledge and complemented with the latest technologies that we can think of. RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
ExCentric was made just like a sculpture. After the initial concept, the main idea, the question was if it was possible and would it work. Experimenting with different angles and materials, making all look easy and light was the real challenge. Our motto is More than function and that is exactly what happens here. This is not just another well made line of office furniture. Its purpose its to function but also to connect, to remember that thinking outside the box is always a possibility...

CHALLENGE:
Finding the angles that make this a different piece of furniture while make it sturdy and functional was the most interesting of this project. It was just like a sculpture. Cutting pieces of wood and discovering that misalignment that could transmit what was intended while keeping it somehow straight and leveled. The thickness of the structure and the points that it intercepts the wood are fundamental to obtain that lightness yet simple effect. An office furniture that makes you wondering...

NAME:
Emotional Objects

PROFILE:
“Emotional Objects” is a new brand of decorative objects, born by the hand of an architect, which had its world debut at Maison & Objet Paris, on January 2016. After nearly twenty years of work in the field, in 2012 João Faria created the "Emotional Objects" concept as a way to produce and market his own objects. This brand, composed of different pieces from butter dishes to office furniture or Bluetooth speakers, will produce only 99 objects. Then the project will be finished. With an important component of craftsmanship, the twenty-six objects developed until now take design to its limits, with no compromises and a great attention to detail. The author´s intention is to make objects that connect to people, create a relationship with their owners and provoke an emotional response.
